Movie Analysis : The World Before Her

Directed by : Nisha Pahuja
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2258685/

A documentary movie that deals with two woman showcasing two different India’s to us.  One, Ruhi Singh, is a contestant at a beauty pageant trying to win Miss India 2011 contest. While other, Prachi Trivedi, works at Durga Vahini camp, training girls of 15-23 age, a Hindu nationalist group exclusively for women.  They both share their views about Indian culture, the place they are at, their dreams, their beliefs and the life they have lived.

Before the beauty pageant contest, all 20 contestants go through a 30 day beauty boot camp. Here, we get to see how in their attempt to achieve fame, many small town girls come and are willing to do whatever they are asked for, like the botox cosmetic surgery where the woman almost forces for changes in her look of face against the will of girl, then the skin whitening treatments, and in one of event the girls are covered from head to  middle so that only their legs are visible to get judged.  One of the girl says, that she doesn’t like all this, and at times she thinks about Indian culture but then she doesn’t have a choice if she has to get fame. The owner of the pageant herself calls the camp as factory, the girls are looked as objects (like the bikini round).  Now the girls who pass and win, see the bright light with becoming successful models and even a chance to enter Bollywood. But the cost at which they do so, is that right ? That is the question raised.

In the camp of Durga Vahini, you feel even more saddened when you see young girls being brainwashed against western culture and the will to make the country fully Hindu with hatred for Muslims and Christians. When one of the young girl part of camp is interviewed, she says with pride that she doesn’t have Muslim friends and is happy about it. You can clearly see the influence of the camp on her mind.  One is willing to kill other people if a need arises.

Prachi Trivedi looks very vulnerable at many places, and it appears the life she lived under her father who with a smile admits how he punished her in 5th standard (if i remember it right) with a iron rod on her foot, probably the anger she has hidden in herself comes out at the camp while training girls.  She has a strong belief that her principles are right, and also she doesn’t go against her father because of only one reason that he at her birth allowed her to live and not kill her.

She herself isn’t willing to get married or produce children, but at one event of camp its told girls should get married at a very young age (i think they said 18), and the other alternative for kitchen work given at camp is gun rifle training. When asked about isn’t it more like being terrorist, Prachi says we don’t make bombs or keep AK47 or even ever used sulphuric acid, how can we be terrorists then.  At the camp they are taught to become strong and protect themselves, and in a event a lady tells them that women will always be weak, such contradicting statements.

There are some disturbing pics shown of girls getting beaten by Hindu Nationalists when seen with a guy or at a bar.

There’s one hard hitting moment when Pooja Chopra’s mother shares her birth story when her father wanted a boy, and how nervous she felt when she found its a girl. Her mother was told, either send Pooja to orphanage, or kill her, and she almost breaks down telling this. And how happy and proud she felt when Pooja won the contest.

Also, the supportive parents of Ruhi who like watching their girl in front page of bombay times and then glued to tv screens to see her win, the disappoint on their face when she doesn’t.

The way Prachi looks at the ongoing telecast of Miss India 2011 on her tv, it made me think in two ways, one was she felt in another life she would had been participant in that contest too, and another was she was watching it with total anger thinking how badly these girls are destroying indian culture getting influenced with western, just as her father states at that time.  Another way of looking at it is… why are Prachi and her father watching the contest if they so much hate it.

The best thing about this documentary is, it never takes sides and always has a non-judgmental tone. We can make our choices, which one do we support and to be frank there’s more of negative in both stories. Infact the way narration is done, there are places where you can draw parallels to both world’s. Only positives I see are, in beauty contest, the girls have a chance to get famous and get fame, plus successful life. While at Durga vahini camp, girls learn self protection, and could live a life without feeling scared of any person.

Though, the women of India aren’t limited to these two world’s shown in the movie, and I feel most would be happy not to be part of any of these.

Nonetheless, a very well made documentary, which showcased two India’s, I aint much aware of.  Very deeply moving, shakes you at many moments and thought provoking when you come out of theatre.

Verdict : 4/5

Loved Aida story, other 2 clicks in parts: Ship of Theseus

Directed by : Anand Gandhi
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1773764/

Indian films with english dialogues turns me off immediately, a reason why I never felt interested in this movie after watching trailers or hearing all the praise from industry people on social platform. Now that I have watched it, I would say it was good movie.. time not wasted but its not a masterpiece or special movie as it has been labelled by many for me.

If the parts of a ship are replaced, bit by bit, is it still the same ship ? The film is based on this idea referenced to human body. Three stories of three people, one with cornea transplant, one with liver cirrhosis and one with donated kidney. All these stories are wonderfully inter-connected in the final scene.

For me, the story of Aaliya (Aida El Kashef) was the best one. Love her reply to the interviewer who indirectly questions if she has limits, or the arguements she has with Vinay (Faraz Khan) or when she gets her eyes back how she feels about her photos she clicks now to her old photos or her struggle to find that one great photo clicked. My most fav moment is when she returns home from hospital after successful operation, and she checks all the photos she had clicked until now, I liked that the scene was extended one. The final shot of this story is very beautiful too.  Aida El Kashef delivers a very fine performance.

There's nice philoshopical conversations in almost all 3 stories which engages you very much. The story of Maitreya (Neeraj Kabi) ailing with liver cirrhosis is good until he accepts cure after having denying the meditation for the fact that its involves animal product. There's a young lawyer who strongly opposes his views to which he reacts very well but the change of heart didn't go well for me. Though Neeraj Kabi's performance was superb. Felt this story was 5-10 mins too long.  I liked the way only song of movie is used in this story, also special mention to cinematographer for capturing some great scenes where Maitreya who walks on and on through roads.

The humor which was to a minimum in 1st two stories, was highly used in the 3rd one involving Navin (Sohum Shah) who has just undergone a kidney transplant. How he gets interested to find about another person who had kidney donated, first thinking he might be the person mistakenly got his kidney and later to find the real person and get justice for him. I love the end to this story, but the friend with whom he goes to the real culprit got additional scenes that I felt were un-necessary. Editing is infact quite loose. The friend who initially helps Navin brings many laughs, specially the scene where they try to find the guy whose kidney was stolen. There's one awkward scene in this story which I wont have liked to be there, trying to get too real. But I liked conversations between Navin and his Ajji, specially the final words of Ajji.

Ship of Theseus is definately worth a watch for something different, there are some great moments to admire in the movie. Yes as a whole it fails to attract me, but I didn't regret watching it at all.

Verdict : NICE

Only 2 were good out of 5 that too with flaws : Shorts

Directed by : Shlok Sharma, Siddharth Gupta, Anirban Roy, Rohit Pandey and Neeraj Ghaywan

I have liked very few short films that I have seen till now, everytime the story fails to create a impact because it ends too abruptly or quickly. The same trend continues here with 3 of the five stories not clicking for me.

That makes me wonder if the films that are loved in festivals, are not the ones I associate with. Or I am generalising too much. Maybe if I happen to make a short movie, I might change my views.

Sujata works for me little bit for the topic it covers, relationship between a young girl and her cousin brother. But the problem is, all happens quickly.. I needed more scenes of the trauma she goes through, before she takes  revenge. Huma Qureshi does well in this story, though not among her best for me.

Epilogue totally went out of my head, the treatment was way too creative for my liking. Didnt like it at all. I kept waiting for this story to end.

Audacity was the 1st short that showed signs of 'finally kuch acha/awesome type ka dikh raha', but what a poor ending it has.

Mehfuz was too slow, Nawazuddin was good in a role that slightly looked inspired from Taxi Driver (to me)..  Again, too less a time to make a impact.

Shor turned out to be the one that I loved almost fully, only that final scene spoiled it a touch.. and the fact that Vineet once again talks in same lingo I have seen him in Gow and Bombay Velvet... making it not look anything new. But the female lead and the train sequence made it a lovely watch.

Overall, Shorts doesn't offer anything that would force me to watch it again someday.

Delhi in a Day [Views]

Directed by : Prashant Nair

A Britisher comes to India, like a typical tourist, he intends to know more about India. But, as colourful India looks with the typical cliches, there's another India he ends up witnessing.

I liked that the film told the message without trying to impose it on you. The climax scene for me was brilliantly done.

The film is a dark comedy, but I felt it had the scope of being much darker, or maybe the director wanted to keep the tone lighter.

The scene where Rohini (Anjali Patil) dances when urged by the other servants, or the one where Chottu (Arun Mallick Kumar) makes her dance when feeling depressed, and Rohini going to a place for help in getting money were the best scenes in the movie. Also, special mention to the song 'Yeh jo hua hai, hua bhi nahi hai' used aptly in the background.

Anjali Patil without a doubt, gives the best performance in the film.. as the maid who is poor, loving, filmy, good dancer and caring. The helplessness on her face, when she finds herself and her other mates in problem due to the money of Britisher that gets stolen. Its not a surprise, that the final shot was kept on her.

Also, Lillette Dubey was very good portaying the rich woman of the house, showing her authority over the servants, and her ways to solve the stolen money problem.

Delhi in a Day, works for me.. its short film, more of a light take on the rich and poor.

Watching a film avoiding Promos!

Have you ever seen a film without watching any of its song promos/dialogue promos ? If you have done it, then its really good, and if you have done it without watching even the theatrical trailers then its wonderful. Because, I have decided to watch films from now on keeping away from any of the film's song promos or dialogue promos.

I would watch all the theatrical trailers the film would release, normally there are 2 or at max 3 theatrical trailers a film has. The Hollywood films do the good thing, they release only main trailers. I had once tweeted too, that how I wish we followed Hollywood in this regard which I know won't happen since we are more of a publicity karo, paisa kamao nation of film-makers.

Aneways, I hope this plan of mine works because this means I will have to avoid watching any music channels on T.V. But, one thing I am sure of is, that it will enhance the joy of watching films further this way. These song/dialogue promos give away too many scenes away. Recent eg is 'Agent Vinod', so many of the action scenes already revealed, why ?

Here's for a new way to deal with the Hindi films for me .. good luck.

Love You To Death [Views]

Directed by Rafeeq Ellias

A dark comedy film that works in pieces mainly for the characterization of the characters, guy interested in money and ambition, girl into the environment stuff, mother prefers video games, father likes wild life, servant dreams of massage parlours in Goa, a small dog 'baby' suffering from human trauma's, a theatre teacher allowing his students to practice by killing the girl in real and a friend of the girl playing a tarrot card reader.

What lets down the film is the screenplay that's bit dull, and the humour that never makes you laugh a lot. Yuki Ellias was the best among all actors in the film, Chandan Roy was a bit restrained and in one scene he totally went into Kaminey mode. Good to see Suhasini Mulay after a long time. Rest cast was decent.

Rafeeq Ellias as a director excels in some particular sequences only. Also, its hard to understand that Chandan and his mom agrees to meet Yuki at a party knowing she might try to kill them.

Some of the best moments from the film would be, the complete doctor sequence which was so hillarious, the theatre teacher sequence, the scene where Yuki prepares food for Chandan and his mom, and the 'Mudh mudh ke na dekh' finale. Also, the interval sequence was classically shot, much like a metaphor.

Overall, Love you to Death could had been much better if the treatment was good. Its a different kind of film, so watchable atleast once.

Most Awaited Films of 2012

Here's my list of top 20 most awaited movies from 2012 :

P.S - The release dates are subjected to change.

Kahaani (March 9)
directed by Sujoy Ghosh, starring Vidya Balan

Based in Kolkata, story of a woman, who is pregnant and is in search of his husband. Vidya Balan looks impressive in its trailer, could be another of her powerful performances.

Shanghai (In between March - June)
directed by Dibakar Banerjee, starring Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi, Pitobash, Kalki Koechin

A political thriller about the rise of common man. The abhay-emraan due makes this one special, Dibakar told in a interview that these two have given powerful performances. Also, wonder if Kalki is once again paired against Abhay or not.

Agent Vinod (March 23)
directed by Sriram Raghavan, starring Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor

A spy movie with a fantastic trailer. Some good humour with action and thrill on cards. Expectations high from Sriram whose last two films Johnny Gaddar and Ek Haseena Thi were loved by cinema lovers.

Ferrari ki Sawaari (April 27)
directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, starring Sharman Joshi

Vidhu Vinod Chopra production film, and Sharman Joshi in male lead. Vidya Balan's item number would add to the film's appeal. Also, the theme would be new, expecting something creative and fresh from it. It might be Sharman's first solo success.

Gangs of Wasseypur (May)
directed by Anurag Kashyap, starring Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin, Shabana Azmi, Piyush Mishra

The film deals with coal mafia, based on Surajbhan Singh, the Bihar politician convicted for Murder. The theme may interest Gulaal lovers especially. Manoj and Shabana are powerful actors, and one can expect Anurag to handle them perfectly. Plus, Nawazuddin has been praised a lot by Anurag on twitter, so looking forward to his acting.

Jannat 2 (May 4)
directed by Kunal Deshmukh, starring Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Esha Gupta

The trailer would be out in a week or two. I loved its earlier part, this time also the main theme is about Emraan believing in earning money quickly by any means. Randeep Hooda has risen as a actor ever since Once upon a time in Mumbai. And Esha would look to impress in her debut.

Dangerous Ishq (May 11)
directed by Vikram Bhatt, starring Karishma Kapoor, Jimmy Shergill, Rajneesh Duggal

Comeback film of Karishma kapoor, where she essays 5 different roles with the film based on 5 generations over past lives in 15th century. Vikram bhatt may impress a lot in one film and totally dissappoint in another. I hope Rajneesh has a substantial role in the film with Jimmy also there. Also, Himesh Reshmmiya has given the music.

Talaash (June 1)
directed by Reema Kagti, starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor

A murder mystery, the trailer didn't reveal much which is quite good. 3 powerful actors, and Reema got enough praise for her directorial debut Honeymoon travels pvt ltd. Also, music by Ram Sampath after Delhi Belly would be something to watch out for.

Rowdy Rathore (June 15)
directed by Prabhu Deva, starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha

2nd film of Prabhu after 'Wanted', and its again a action film. It could be the film that could re-define Akshay Kumar's career. Also, a chance to see how good the chemistry is between Sonakshi and Akshay.. as they will be seen later in 'Joker' also.

Barfi (July 13)
directed by Anurag Basu, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana d Cruz

Modern Charlie chaplin who cant talk or listen, a comedy film that could be one of best of year if its well presented. Kites failed but I loved it and Basu always has been one of my favs director. The buzz of the trailer is, that the movie would be anticipated by everyone once its trailer is out. Ranbir-Priyanka chemistry was missing in Anjaana Anjaani, one hopes they are sizzling this time around. Also, south actress Ileana makes her hindi debut with this film.

Ek Tha Tiger (August)
directed by Kabir Khan, starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey

Salman Khan plays the role of a undercover agent of Indian Intelligence Agency. The film's action sequences are told to be inspired from Bourne Series. Also, Salman-Katrina were last seen in Yuvvraaj that didn't work. Kabir Khan is known for hard-hitting films in his own way, I expect different action film than the usual Salman films we have got accustomed to now.

Raaz 3 (August 31)
directed by Vikram Bhatt, starring Emraan Hashmi, Bipasha Basu, Jacqueline Fernandez

The film explores the horror of the human heart. Emraan-Bipasha paired for first time against each other. Both the previous raaz versions are close to me because of personal reasons. Hence, this also becomes a highly awaited film for me. Vikram Bhatt had directed 1st part, Mohit did the 2nd one, and now Vikram gets to direct again.

Heroine (September)
directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, starring Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda

The journey of a girl to stardom and what follows after that. Aishwarya was officially going to do it, but pregnancy made her leave the film. Kareena Kapoor is in right hands to give good performance, only thing is that Will Madhur form a screenplay that's different from Fashion as the main theme is holding some resemblance.. I am sure, once the trailer comes out.. these negative vibes will end. If the film works, Kareena could win best actress awards in 2013 everywhere.

Aiyya (September 28)
directed by Sachin Khandelkar, starring Prithiviraj, Rani Mukherjee

A anurag kashyap production, and remake of south film 'Arya', Prithivaj to make hindi debut. The story is about a Tamilian painter falling in love with a Maharashtrian girl. The name 'Anurag' always increases my expectations.

Lootera (October 26)
directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, starring Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha

Its his 2nd film after the much praised 'Udaan'. Ranveer plays a character who is fond of Dev Anand. A film set in 50's backdrop, as both Ranveer and Sonakshi fall in love under strange circumstances. Also, first film for Ranveer outside yashraj banner.

Yash Chopra untitled next (November)
directed by Yash Chopra, starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

Yash chopra returns to direction after more than 5 yrs, last being Veer Zaara. Shahrukh-Katrina together in a movie for first time.. A R Rahman music and Gulzar lyricist.. its a total powerful cast and crew. But, the question remains, will Yash Chopra make a love story he has made in past and make today's youth bow down to it, or will he bow down and make a film that today's youth likes. I hope its the former, with mix of latter.

Once upon a time in Mumbai 2 (No date fixed yet)
directed by Milan Luthria, starring Akshay Kumar

There is no declaration of rest cast yet, the film is a sequel to the original one, as the story continues further. Akshay plays the character Emraan played, i.e Dawood. Its set in 80's and shows the rise of the evil prince to turn the king of Underworld. I loved the 1st part, very stylish and great punchlines. Expecting Milan to get in my good books again after dissappointing in The Dirty Picture.

Matru Ki Bijlee ka Mandola (No date fixed yet)
directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, starring Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma, Pankaj Kapur, Shabana Azmi

To work with a talented director would be blessing in disguise for Imran only if he takes this opportunity. Vishal has in past brought the best out of actors in his films like Saif in Omkara or Shahid in Kaminey. It also would be test of Anushka Sharma, as females in past have had key roles in vishal's films. To see Pankaj and Shabana together in a film, just increases the craze. Also, not to forget the music would be by Vishal Bharadwaj.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (No date fixed yet)
directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, starring Farhan Akhtar

Another ambitious film it would be for Farhan as a actor. Plus, he has yet to give a hit as solo actor.. this could be it. A story on legendary athelete 'Milkha Singh' , the theme reflects 'zindagi se bhaago nahi, zindagi ke saath bhaago'. The music would be by A R Rahman.

Sudhir Mishra's next (No date fixed yet)
directed by Sudhir Mishra, starring Arjun Rampal, Chitrangada Singh

Chitrangada plays a ambitious woman who accuses her boss Arjun for sexual harassment, whom she loves. Slight deja-vu of Aitraaz, but I am sure the treatment would be different, and so would be the ending.

Some of the other notable films that could surprise this year are :

• 1920 Evil Returns (directed by Bhushan patel, starring Aftab, Tia,Vidya Malvade)
• Blood Money (directed by Vishal Mahadkar, starring Kunal Khemu, Amrita Puri)

• Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (directed by Sameer Sharma, starring Kunal Kapoor, Huma)

Also, I hope 'Its my Life' and 'Mumbai Cutting', pending since 2008 release this year.

Since I have started watching English films a lot too now, so here's my list of Hollywood films that I am waiting for the most (not sure if they would release in India, this year only.. so feel free to correct)

Dark Knight Rises (July)

I haven't seen the 1st part, but the 2nd part with the 'Joker' character is one of my most fav. The trailer was very impressive, plus Nolan is well known for keeping screenplay in such a way that you could keep thinking over week's what the ending was.

The Bourne Legacy (August)

I was dissappointed to know that Matt Damon won't be in this 4th part. He was spectacular in the first three parts. The action sequences, background score, engaging screenplay and Damon were the reasons for success of earlier parts. It would be a test for 'The Bourne Legacy' to repeat it without Damon in the film.

Skyfall (November)

Read in a interview that its a bond film. A confession : I have not seen a single bond film. This could be my first, as spy films I enjoy watching a lot.

Django Unchained (Dec 25)

Tarantino to explore racism and slavery, with Leonardo di caprio. It's clearly one of most anticipated films for me. I guess they both haven't worked together yet. Expect another stylish film from Tarantino.

The Great Gatsby (December)

A leonardo di caprio film playing the lead 'Gatsby'. Another film based on a novel, I just hope it turns out much better than J.Edgar did. Also, there is a talk that Amitabh Bachchan might play special appearance or cameo in the film.

I hope 2012 lives upto the expectations from the biggies, as more often than not.. these biggies turn out to be  bad experiences. Looking forward to see each and every film mentioned in this blogpost. Bring it on!

Good Night Good Morning [Views]

Directed by Sudhish Kamath

I don't think we have to take love out of one person to give it to another. Love is a bottomless glass.

This film either is inspired from 'Before Sunrise' or I see it that way.. Whatever it is or not, the concept this time is little different, the strangers have a never ending conversation on phone, not in person.

Two strangers Turiya (Manu Narayan) and Moira (Seema Rahmani) happen to meet at a pub on New Year's eve. Turiya leaves without any conversation with his friends, on a car journey to Philadelphia. He decides to randomly call the same girl. Moira at first isn't keen to talk with a random stranger on phone, but feeling bored and having nothing to do, she thinks of trying him out. And hence the conversation on phone between the two leads begin that continues till the end of the film..

The impressive thing for me in this film was, how well the screenplay and narration is kept, because here you are gonna depend mainly on a phone conversation happening between the leads. There are just two locales available, one the girl's hotel room and other the boy with his buddies in car. Also, the film is filmed mainly in black and white, with very few coloured sequences.

The talks of Turiya and Moria starts from random flirting, goes to each other's personal information, pasts of theirs.. Their conversation talks almost everything about Love, Relationships and Life. There is a splendid spoof on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai too.

Also, the fictional stories both characters speak during the conversation are brilliantly visualised. Then, the conversation among the buddies or that photo taking act, helps the viewers get a breather from the split screen talks on phone between the leads.

My fav scenes would be, one where Moira talks about her opinion on relationships as a whole.. and the one where Turiya asks her to flush something out. Also, the geek sequence was humurous.

Writing is very good, its real, humourous and connectable easily. Dialogues are a major plus in the film, because the film is dependant on the conversations mainly, and they are very well written. Direction by Sudhish Kamath is top-notch, I like that he kept the climax way it is.. and not the other one he uploaded on youtube. Editing is good, the fact that its a short film helps otherwise the split-screen narration would had become tough to engage people for a longer period.

Both Manu Narayan and Seema Rahmani were excellent in their performances, had they faltered the film wont had worked because the split screen narration meant a lot of close up scenes, and hence the expressions mattered. Also, they both have good screen presence especially Manu who at times reminded me of Abhishek bachchan in appearance.. Vasanth and Raja Sen were fine as supporting characters, they hardly had much to do in film, except for 3-4 dialogue scenes.

Overall, Good Night Good Morning works for me.. for the reason that it talks about so much without preaching, its more like two people telling their opinions on the most common things that are part of everyone's life. It makes you think, think and have a answer to the same questions Turiya and Moira ask each other on phone, and when a film does that.. its likely that it has hit the right note..

3D Movies

There has been a lots of 3d hindi films coming this year. It started with Haunted, then Ra.One and now Don2. While Joker was officially the 1st one to be declared as 3d film, coming next year. Hollywood aneways produces plenty of 3d films, 'The adventures of Tintin' and 'Puss in Boots' being the only films I have seen till now. 'Wall-E' is the only film that I consider pending among animation films, heard a lot good about it.

I didn't see Haunted in 3d. But rest films, I have seen in 3d and what I wonder is that does 3D means a content like in a film we have drama, action etc. Or does it mean that the entire film should be shaped up in 3d. If its the latter then the films haven't been upto the mark in terms of 3d for me. There are far few scenes that actually make 3d viewing effective. And then the negative thing is you can't enjoy the visuals/cinematography of the film. The glasses reduce the effect a lot.

Either I haven't seen the films that are totally enriched of 3d or I have wrong opinion about 3d films. For now, I believe that a 3d film should not mean 15-20 mins of 3d and rest is normal stuff. Maybe, my views change with time as I am still a newbie in this 3d films viewing.

Films - Ever learnt anything from it ?

We connect to the films, a lot. Most of us do. But, how many times have we tried to do something because you liked it in the film, how many times after watching a film you say 'Yes, I should do like that guy/girl did in movie from today onwards in my life' or 'Hey, I should talk to him/her' or 'I should respect him/her' or 'I should give him/her proper space' etc etc etc.

Films are just like friends, they inspires us, they guide us to some aspects which sometimes we forget or ignore about ourselves. Yup, I take them that much seriously, they help me seek answers to my problems. Sometimes they help, sometimes they dont. But, no hard feelings.

Like in 'No one killed Jessica' , the girl watches a film 'Rang de Basanti' in theatre, and comes out, does sms to her friends, for a same candle march. Fine, I agree it was a dramatic scene in the film. But, if it was your life situation, you would had done it too, maybe not that fast.

Ofcourse getting inspired from evil films or stunts like dhoom, is silly and wrong. And many times, films do give a wrong message to the youth and we all know how quick the youth responds to a bad message that has a kind of style in it.

Also, films are a reflection of your current mental state. At a particular phase of your life, a film would make a certain impact on your life, and at another phase, it would make no impact.

I have had few personal experiences, that I can recall. One was Rab ne bana di jodi, it reminded me some important things about love, that I was ignoring or not able to look in my life. It almost worked for me. From Luck by Chance, I told myself, that I would never take success by cheating people who are close to me. While Love Breakups Zindagi too told few things about love to me, I did apply them to some extent to me, not fully though. But all these films keep you thinking. Dev.D is another film, that I always keep thinking about, can't write the reasons for it. Wake up Sid helped me lessen my arrogant nature especially towards parents. You know, when you see the negative side of yours in a film, you feel what you need to improve on.

I won't deny that I haven not taken bad inspirations from films too, everyone does(or atleast many do). Everytime I see a romantic emotional story, I get totally involved in them. The reason why Rockstar holds important film for me this 11th Nov. Because its not, the status of the characters in the films that matters to me, 90% of the times I look at their love, in what way they love, what they do for their love and upto what madness they go to achieve or remain in their love.

People who see films only for timepass or their fav celebs, may not really agree or connect with this blogpost of mine. I hope rest must have got some film names in their mind, write them down if you wanna share.. ;)

Opening and End Credits

There was a time in Hindi films when opening credits were used as a means to let audience get settled into their seats so that they would not miss the film which actually starts once 'Directed by' came written. It still happens today in some films. And when I say plain written credits, then I mean no background photo or visual happening at same time, even no animation.

But as we have advanced now, lots of creative opening credits have started coming. In 'Jaane tu ya jaane Na', we see various couples in start of the film which has no direct connection with the main characters of the film, just a way to start the film with the feeling the director wants audience to have right from beginning. In' Break ke Baad', Kunal Kohli opts for writing the credits with moving visuals but they come written on various home furniture or non living things. Cool, but it was extended a lot...

Lots of directors choose background themes or instrumentals with visuals, it was the case in JTYJN, My name is Khan, Jhootha Hi Sahi, Ghajini and many many more films. Some directors use songs(it may or may not be item songs) as a means to begin a film, with credits over it. In doing so, some may start the film directly with it, while some may put one sequence and then bring the song to ease the action. Dabangg, Ready, Jism, Rog, DevD are few egs of this format.

And then there are some films, who follow the Hollywood format i.e credits with visual action going on, dialogues happening between characters. I can't actually recall the hindi films who did this, anyone wants to help? Maybe Kurbaan was one of it and yea Dil Se did it too. One may argue if thats the right way, who would notice the credits in all this. But how many do actually notice credits really ?

For End Credits, most of our films follow a common path, they end it with a remix track or promotional track done for the film, numerous egs of it like Yuvvraaj, Kidnap, Love Aaj Kal, Jab we Met, Murder2, Awarapan. There are some films that use background audio themes with either still last shot of film or black screen, like Fanaa, Dev.D, Raavan etc. Some creative instances are like Dev.D having credits coming in a 180 degree revolve that then shifts into normal mode. Then, Rab ne bana di jodi had the honeymoon of the characters happening in the left scaled photo along with credits. While Rohit Shetty has this habit of always showing behind the scenes of shooting in the end credits of his films.

If the audience have liked or loved the film, you would expect them to watch the end-credits before leaving the theatre, and hence the director has to make sure its worth it too. Though, there is section of audience where I belong too.. who aneways wait till the end-credits end.

If you ask my preference, then I feel the perfect Opening Credits are, when the film begins with 1-2 sequence, then goes into a song(which aint a item track) and rolls over the credits along with it. That's the one I love the most!  While in the end-credits, I prefer themes always with some unseen visuals from the film, or behind the scenes etc. I don't really like remixes or promotional tracks fitted at the end, as sometimes it hurts to see them if they were one of your most liked songs of the album.

Also, the font style used by lots of makers is modern and stylish, but some opt for simple look and feel, like Nagesh in Mod.

One thing for sure, we will keep getting lots of variety with each new film in terms of both the aspects of credits. And with time, surely gonna see more innovations done in this regard.. Keep the good work going.

Fans

You know you are a fan of a celeb, if you day/night think about his/her films/music. You wait for his films/music/song the most every year. You don't feel like appreciating other celebs much, especially the ones that are the major competitors with your fav celeb. You are a die-hard fan!

How many times, have you seen a Shahrukh Khan fan not make fun of Aamir/Salman ? Be it any debate on online forum, be it twitter, be it interview or any of their film. The same applies to Aamir and Salman fans too. One has to accept it that if you are a fan of a particular star celeb who are among the top10, then you are bound to have certain dislike for the rest 9.. the dislike could be small or big, depends on the kind of person you are. Thats a price you pay, for being a fan of a particular celeb, a die-hard fan to be precise.

There are 2 kinds of fans, one who matures with time, one who never matures. I have met both types. There was a incident on twitter, I wrote something good about Mausam music. As a result, 2 sonam kapoor fans followed me. Now, after few days, I wrote a tweet  'Mausam music is very good, among best of 2011, but still it doesn't enter my top5 of this year.' The sonam kapoor fans wanted it to be in top5, maybe even no.1. So, they unfollowed me. Ofcourse, it didn't matter much to me as I never followed them.. and I knew they are gonna unfollow me one day! The point is, that a fan adores his/her favourite celeb to such a extent that even a small comment which holds true, would mean anti-comment made towards the celeb for that fan.

You should not argue too much with the immature fans, they won't agree with you ever. They will remain stuck to their thoughts, and only waste your time. There was a time when I use to argue with them, not anymore. The ignore button gets pressed, the moment I see such thing coming from any immature fan. You can go anywhere else and do your yack yack, I ain't interested.

Some of the immature fans, are very violent too. Seen many cases of abuse on twitter, and surely the count of such people would be very high. I don't like to confront them, always prefer to stay away. Infact, due to these kinda of fans, I feel bad for every celeb who uses Twitter. These celebs try to communicate with their fans., I know most celebs use the medium mainly to promote films, but say 10 yrs back, did anyone thought they could actually be communicating with their celebs so often. But, the violent fans start sending abusive tweets, thinking they are succeeding in making that celeb feel bad. A childish act, but very common in today's times. They don't even spare journalists, then how would they leave celebs.

Personally, I have no feeling for every person who is a fan of a celeb. Because thats not the kind of company I want to be around me. If my friends happen to be like that, then I make it a point, not to talk anything or talk to a minimum about their fav celebs with them. Because I know if I talk more on them, they will show me their love towards that celeb in abundance, which will irritate me. So, if you ever thought why I talk less on your fav celeb with you, then the answer you got just now.

I agree that in your top5 fav list, some actors wont be there, like Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar won't come in my top5 list, because they time and again dissappoint me with their choice of films. But, the key is.. they wont either come in my list of worst 5 actors list, or the list of actors whom I can't stand. No, nothing like that. If you have the stardom, then you certainly have got some talent to get it. How much different people like you, depends on how your talent is nurtured by the directors, and ofcourse whether the reason the people don't like you is personal or related to your work.

In all, to lead a life of being a fan of a celeb is very tedious, and not worth fun at all. Atleast that's how I always feel. Enjoy every actor's good work, have constructive criticism about the bad work.. the filmi world would become so nice.

Har ek 'Film Viewer' zaroori hota hai ...

If I go about classfying the film viewers we have, especially in India. Then it would most probably be

Intellectual
These viewers, watch films intensely and passionately. They like to note every point in a movie and then discuss with fellow friends. For them it doesn't matter whether its a serious film like Black Friday, or a dark humour like Yeh Saali Zindagi, or a slapstick like Hey Baby. Every film holds its own importance, is the mantra.

Critical
These viewers, are more of inclined to see what they didn't like in the film, and more often they would compare the hindi films with hollywood, how much copied it is etc. Actually, in a way they too form the 'intellectual' viewers group, but with a wee bit of difference that they focus more on a certain aspect during a film, while watching it or while analysing it later. A large section of this group belongs to 'reviewers or critics' who write for various sites, or newspapers or work as film journalist on tv channels.

Time-pass
They just want entertainment. It doesn't matter if the comedy is slapstick, if the drama is going over the top, or if there is a item song coming at anywhere in the film. Just entertain them, no social messages and no preaching/lecturing. These are more or less, the aam janta, the family audiences who watch films every sunday or most often labelled as 'popcorn' audience.

Genre Basis
If you classify time-pass viewers further, then you would get these viewers who watch films based on genres i.e Romantic/Thriller/Action/Drama/Family/Emotional/Art/Path-Breaking/Animation etc etc. They incline themselves to either one particular genre or maybe two/three, and would not watch rest genre films, especially in theatre. You would often see a clash between a romantic viewer opinion with a thriller viewer opinion.

Fans/Haters
These viewers watch the film based on their liking/disliking towards a celebrity. The former is very clear, a fan is bound to go and see their favourite celeb films. While the latter is surprising but it does happen, the haters go to see the movie so that they can come and then rip apart the film on online forums, social sites or their friends, and if nothing then blog it.

The clashes does make it ugly often, whether its between intellectual and critical or critical with fans/haters, or any other. But, all these viewers together institute the collections of a film boxofficewise, and also in terms of cinema watchers these all provide varied opinions on almost every film. Just think of it, can you even name a single film that was loved by 100% audience, even Sholay/DDLJ are disliked by a section of people.

Every person will have a particular take on a film, it may be baised, it may be personal, it may be critical, or it maybe thoughtful but at the end of the day .. they all are just presenting and sharing their views. Just imagine, if you remove 'Critical' section.. wont the fans/haters or intellectual or other section miss them. Because they are very much used to their views. Like or dislike, they will always read/listen the views.. so what if they disagree or abuse them in the end.

If you ask me, I kind of dislike every viewer that doesn't see film properly, or analyse atleast 75% of it, if not fully. The time-pass and fans/haters section irritate me the most. While if you know me, then you would know my opinion about critics, but at the end of the day.. they are bound by their duties, their life, their earning.. though I sometimes do believe that Film Reviewing should be limited to sharing views at best, and not a job based, where audience decide to watch a film or not by your views. Yes, good writing skills does make you applicable for Review Writing jobs, but you can even use those skills for debating on endless topics about films or celebs, rather than writing how a newly released film is. Aneways, this is a never ending topic.

Even there are many cases, when two intellectuals or two critics would differ with each other. So, clashes dont just happen among different section of viewers, but also with the same section of viewers too.

In the end point is that the film viewing has been and will always be divided among these groups, and hence we are always going to see opinion on a film divided, only difference would be, the magntitude!

Battle of the Top5 - Bring it on!

The top5 male actors in Hindi Film Industry are - Aamir, Shahrukh, Salman, Hrithik and Akshay. I know everyone have their favs, and also different orders. But these are the main big stars, with a massive fan following. All of them are coming next year with films that everyone are looking forward to.

Has it happened before ever, when each of them had 1 film in a year at same time ? Also, if at all it happened(I cant recall though), then were those films as big as this time they are. Let me write down the list first.

Aamir Khan
• 'Untitled film', directed by Reema Kagti, starring Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor. Music by Ram Sampath(Delhi Belly fame)
• 'Dhoom3', directed by Vishal Krishna Acharya, starring Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra. Music by Pritam

Shahrukh Khan
• 'Untitled film', directed by Yash Chopra, starring Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Music by AR Rahman

Salman Khan
• 'Ek tha Tiger', directed by Kabir Khan, starring Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey. Music by Sohail Sen

Hrithik Roshan
• 'Agneepath', directed by Karan Malhotra, starring Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor. Music by Ajay-Atul.

Akshay Kumar
• 'Once upon a time in Mumbaai2', directed by Milan Luthria, starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid/Imran(no one finalled yet).
• 'Rowdy Rathore', directed by Prabhu Deva, starring Sonakshi Sinha.

You expect a thriller with Aamir back in cop uniform in reema's film with two big actresses alongside. And then the much talked about dhoom3, how would a actor like aamir portray the famous run-chase series.

Yash Chopra returns to direction with Shahrukh as lead, Rahman's music, Gulzar's lyrics.. Did you wanted anything else? Dont be greedy!

Salman in a yashraj film, back with Katrina Kaif. A pair that is yet to set the stage on fire. Kabir Khan has impressed in the past with his work. And then, talks are that film is inspired from Bourne Series, means some new action, fast action to be precise. Dont we love Salman doing action roles! And mind you, with Kabir Khan as director, one can assume it wont be another bodyguard tragic.  Music by Sohail Sen(pritam gave up because of too much work load), will also be much to look forward to with Whats ur rashee and Mere Brother ki Dulhan, two great soundtracks in a row.

'Naam vijay dinnanath chauhan', the first trailer created immense buzz. And we are craving for so much more.. The battle between Vijay Dinnanath Chauhan and Kaancha Cheena resumes after nearly 20 years  gap. Will the makers live upto their promises that this film has just the same soul with different treatment and dialogues. If yes, then we are in for a very good film, who doesn't like to see REVENGE films, I specially do. With Madhvi's role stretched in this version of agneepath, Priyanka Chopra gets a lot to offer too. And Rishi Kapoor's negative track. The aarti used in the trailer was impressive, so Ajay-Atul may have a winner in music too(Singham their last film).

Akshay Kumar, we are tired of all silly comedies, and he isnt getting success either in them. So, he returns in two action films, sequel to Once upon a time in Mumbaai2 by Milan Luthria, the role is tailor made for him and hence the expectations rises. Then, Rowdy Rathore has Prabhu Deva with his 2nd film after Wanted, we may finally see the return of Khiladi with this film(Tashan had few glimpses).

Phew, that is so much to look forward to. And if all this isnt enough.. Then, there is Shanghai, Barfee, Jannat2, Bol Bacchan, Raaz3 also lined up in 2012, where Actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol, Abhishek Bachchan are gonna give fight to these top5.

Also, its a big year for Katrina Kaif, who is paired against Shahrukh, Salman and Aamir, each of them in yashraj starrers.

One thing is for sure, the eyes are on how well these 5 actors compete in 2012. Whoever wins the battle at Box Office, here's wishing that the quality of these films lives upto the hype and expectations that will build as the release comes near of each of the mentioned films....

I dont like Films - Your Reaction ?

Some people dont like romantic films, some dont like emotional films, some dont like action films while some dont like comedy films etc etc. But then there are people who dont like any films at all except for 1-2 rare films.

What do you do when you meet such people ? Do you say that fine, they have their own likings, they may be liking things which I dont like in my life .. Or Do you say that how on earth can someone not like watching films ?

Are Indian films standards still so low that some people exists who feel to dislike watching any genre of films or its just that these people aren't keen to watch films even if good quality products are kept in front of them.

I dont know but I somehow feel strange to even imagine that people actually say no to quality films that are indeed quality products, leave aside blockbuster n etc type films.

Have you been through any such people ? Have your say ..

P.S - I am blogging after long time here, so have no idea if I had written on this before, If I have then do remind :d .

Too Much Love for a Celebrity!

I have seen some people madly worship their favourite celebrities. Sometimes its irritating to see such stuff. I mean a person keeps speaking about only one person, always giving importance only to one person as if only one celebrity exists in the world.

For eg : If a person loves Shaan, whenever a new album will release, the person will be like 2 shaan songs, and if no shaan songs then why no shaan songs. I mean if your fav singer isnt among the album singers that shouldnt mean that the album is not worth a listen. Hard to understand such behaviour. Take the instance of Shahrukh Khan, some friends love them to such large extent that they arent willing to see other actor films at all.

When I ask them, why didn't you see this and this film, their reply comes why waste time on them, hum toh seedha shahrukh ki hi films dekhenge. I wonder what should I call them, Srk freaks or Bollywood Freaks. Even if they are srk freaks, they are in a way going to see srk film which means they are going to see shahrukh's acting in the film. If they can appreciate his acting skills then why not try to appreciate other actors and their films too, ofcourse only good ones. Just to get a glimpse of srk, you go to see the film is childish.

Even I so many times watch film because of my fav but my reasons are different, I go there expecting those favs to deliver in terms of their work not to see a glimpse of their looks and all, for that google is always there.

There are certain occasions when this extra or baised love makes me dislike that celebrity for a certain time which shouldnt happen.

I always believe you should never show off too much for a celebrity and same way not show off too much hatredness for a celebrity. Show it in a way that others appreciate it instead of making others get irritated. ;)

I dont know if all this happens with anyone else or not, but it certainly happens with me time and again. And I am yet to find a way to get out of all this as daily I get to see all this happening in some way or other.

Imagination of Songs Picturisation. ..

Whenever new songs release, we imagine the way songs would be picturised in the film. If the starcast is good then we imagine them along with putting ourselves also in the situation and if the starcast is not well known, we keep it just to ourselves. I dont know if everyone does it or not, but I do it. Sometimes, doing this creates expectations which might not meet when the film releases and the actual picturisation of the song appears. And then you are stuck with your own thought picturisation against the used one in the film.

My eg would be Jannat song, title track Jannat jahan where I had imagined that the song will show the actor getting mad over his success in earning money which was there in the film but the madness wasnt to the extent I had expected in my imaginations.

Now, love aaj kal songs, just thinking how the songs would be used, on which saif would be picturised etc etc. I think its quite natural, the more u think about a song, the more chances you would be able to connect to the song provided the song is good. Infact, speaking personally, I feel if you imagine situation of the song only then you are fully involved with the song. Though, opinions may differ here ;)

I think its fun doing it, the liking for a song simply doubles by just thinking of the background that song should have, how the song's emotion should come out through video.

If you havent done it till now, try once for a new album, you would love it. ;)

New Album - How to rate it!

I wonder how many times should we hear a full album before rating it. For Instance, Tashan comes in mind which I initially found average but after I heard it 8-10 times, I ended giving it 3.25 out of 5. And now Jashn, where I found 2 songs mediocre and 1 song nice but when I heard it again n again I started loving them.

Also, one major aspect is the timing of song with your own mood. If you are in a good mood then you might not be able to love the sad songs that much as you could had in a low mood. So, does it mean one needs to be in sad mood while listening new sad songs? :O .

Now, there is a romantic song in the album which I found average initially but when I heard it at night in earphones, it had a deep effect on me . So, this makes me think that along with own mood, two more aspects are important. One is at what time you are listening what genre of song and other is the quality of the song.

I always feel romantic songs perfect time is after 12 midnight. The peaceful time, with no disturbance, and the amazing feel that comes with the song cant be described. First time, when I had noticed this was with Tumhe apna banane ki kasam khayi song on radio and I even remember the time, it was 12:45 am .

Also, When you hear the songs on Earphones, the quality is much better than with speakers and you end up connecting with songs more easily.

So, a album has so many aspects yet I doubt how many of music freaks would do so much. They would just give the songs 2-3 chances and then give their verdict out without thinking that they heard the songs in wrong mood or the quality was poor or the timing of listenings songs wasnt right etc etc.

Atleast I am not one of them, thats the reason I keep delaying my Music reviews as until I feel fully satisfied that this song has got its full due, I cant rate the album. And so many times it has happened that my Music Rating for a album goes high when the film releases due to the picturisation of the songs that adds additional points towards the liking of the song, though I wonder if the rating of the album should be increased for that or not.

Aneways, thats it ... Will be rating 3 music albums sooner. ;)

Slumdog Millionaire [Views]

Director : Danny Boyle

Release Date : Jan 16th,2009

Plot :

The film is about a person Jamal Malik who lives in the slums of India, goes through various hardships of life and then one day sits on the hot seat with Anil Kapoor for the show Who wants to be a Millionaire?. He goes to show hoping that his girlfriend will be watching it and he could locate her through it. He ends up winning the money but gets accused of cheating. Did he really cheat or it was all destiny ? Will he end up finding his girlfriend and what was his earlier life before the show? Thats what Slumdog Millionaire is all about.

Pros :

Dev Patel(i.e Old Jamal) has done a very good job, especially his scene with Irfan Khan on the Q.no 2 of the show. The emotions come out so well on his face.

Freida Pinto(Latika) looks beautiful and has played her part well, though she doesnt have quite big role.

Irfan Khan impresses in a small cameo of Police inspector.

The screenplay is superb, keeps you on the edge of seat most of the time.

The slums of India are quite well captured.

The younger Jamal,Salim and Latika impresses the most in the film.

Danny Boyle has done very good job in the direction with the film, especially the way Danny tries to narrate the story about how Jamal answers most of the questions with the reference of past life is really superb.

The climax scene though you would know what is expected to come yet a special feeling does come, wanting to see him win, and its also very well shown, the enthusiasm of the people all around wanting to see if he would win or not through tv sets.It sort of reminded me of Harshavardhan of KBC,though there is no relevance of him in context of the film.

Cinematography is superb.

The background score was too good, a r rehman delivers yet another excellent score especially o saaya.

Cons :

Anil Kapoor sort of dissappointed me,firstly he was made to behave way too comically, secondly as a host he is intentionally calling a slum person chai wala again and again, and thirdly(Spoiler coming), how can he get so angry that a slum is winning a good prize and end up helping him by giving him a wrong answer during a commercial break.I really dont see any valid reason for him to do so.

Its hard to believe that the young Jamal and Salim all of a sudden start speaking English so fluently during the Taj scene.

The transformation of Old Salim in the end doesnt really look real, can call it a cinematic liberty though few extra scenes could had done well for it as the film isnt any long either.

Extras :

Dialogues were good. There ist any full song used except for Jai ho that comes during end credits, quite well choreographed. As a music album, the songs doesnt really impress but with the film they do blend in very well.Mahesh Manjerakar is sort of wasted in a small role.Saurabh Shukla was ok.

My Favourite Scenes/Dialogues :

The first dialogue that comes written on screen during start of film.

How actually Jamal knew the answer of 1st question.

The reply of Jamal to Irfan Khan when he says that this question my 5 year old daughter would also had answered but you couldnt.

The cricket question in 2nd half.

The call centre scene when Jamal sits on the seat when a executive asks him to adjust for few minutes.

The selling of autograph photo by younger Salim.

Maman murder scene.

The climax scene.

Overall, Slumdog Millionaire should be liked a lot for the performances of characters Jamal,Salim and Latika with good cameos from Irfan Khan. And above all, the narration of story by Danny Boyle.
