Movie Analysis : Drishyam 2 (Amazon Prime)

Directed by : Jeethu Joseph

His mind has taken a pledge to protect his family. We cannot win.

Spoilers ahead..

Six years has passed since Georgekutty (Mohanlal) saved himself and his family from the incident that lead to the death of Varun - Prabhakar (Asha Sharath and Siddique) family's son. Georgekutty is owner of a movie theatre now and also has been working on script based on his own life for past some years. But things haven't changed yet, the police are still looking for clues that may lead to the body of Varun and Georgekutty's family living with the threat looming large over them.

My first malayalam movie, had to watch due to the kind of reviews it was getting and for first 30 so mins I was wondering what made people love this, the proceedings were slow and not leading anywhere. But that was so intentional, if you stay patient then everything gets connected in many twists that follows, a good 2nd act and just brilliant final act specially the final 20 mins.

I am guessing the 1st movie had same storyline as Hindi one as I had only seen the latter. Majority of the 1st act is about how Rani (Meena) lives with that night incident trauma so much still effecting her that she has to ask her neighbour Saritha (Anjali Nair) to come over for sleep everytime Georgekutty stays out. Also, the elder daughter Anju (Ansiba) suffers from seizures and the dreams about what happened to Varun. We also are introduced to Saritha's abusive husband, Sabu (Sumesh Chandran) and Jose (Ajith Koothattukulam) who happened to kill his brother in law on the same night when Georgekutty was busy burying Varun in the police station.

The moment the reality of some characters is told, is when the movie's pace picks up and never really stops after that. We are on edge of seat thinking, will the trap work and the body will be found, and if they do find the body, will Georgekutty survive or does his mind workout a new plan? All these questions get answered with some very good surprises.

The writing team really did well, putting in 'luck' and 'copyright' angle so that you can't argue how the hell is this possible because Georgekutty himself thinks it might not work, he's just taking a chance and hoping God is with him. Also, what works is how he feels about Prabhakar's family's loss - guilt he can't let off. Personally I never felt anything over Varun's death so I was always on Georgekutty side in both films.

Love the reaction on everyone's face when Jose tells where the body is. There's also two resembling scenes from earlier film, one is the interrogation where Georgekutty family is standing in a line and he again tries to narrate same story of '2nd and 3rd Aug'. And other is the final scene of his slow walk having survived yet again but will still live in the shadow of what if something might come up again. I am not sure if Drishyam3 is possible, maybe would be too much of extension of same case, but would be something if director Jeethu Joseph could pull it off again.

My fav moment is the look on Georgekutty face when a body is discovered and without saying anything Rani learns about the truth. And then the entire guesthouse sequence where Prabhakar family and the Inspector are joined by producer of Georgekutty's film and he reveals the script while we keep cutting to the court scenes, 'I fear this is start of something' dialogue uttered as we slowly realise the sharp mind of Georgekutty at work again (might give a great competition to Professor from Money Hiest).

Apart from the slow 1st act, which I won't really say is a problem, it very much plays a big part to how much we end up enjoying the rest movie. One issue I had was with overdose of reaction zoom in shots, I don't know if thats a regular thing in Malayalam industry, but its something I don't like. Also, I was thinking if Sabu and Saritha could had a moment or dialogue or something when Georgekutty walks past them in the end. They clearly despite betraying, had the kind of emotions neighbours of Georgekutty had for his family when they beat the constable in end of last film.

Love the use of only track 'Ore Pakal', a soft slow song that beautifully highlights the kind of traumatic life Rani is living these 6 years, not able to come out of the past.

Everyone chips in with good performances, with ofcourse Mohanlal stealing the show, specially everytime he emotes with those eyes and stares.

Doesn't quite get that 'What the.. Wow' moment when we learnt where Georgekutty buried the body in 1st film which was always going to be hard to beat, yet many times in this sequel we cheer up finding how he is going to avoid a jail term with his plans. Drishyam2 is a wonderful sequel, makes good use of new characters connecting to the previous film, plays out the trauma family lives and how Georgekutty is always calm and few steps ahead of everyone yet again.

Please tell me, hindi version of it, starring Ajay Devgan would be coming out by next year or so. It has huge hit and plenty of taalis in theatres (if corona is gone by then) written all over it.

My Rating : 8.5/10

Eega [Views]

Directed by : S.S Rajamouli
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2258337/

Nani (Nani) loves Bindhu (Samantha Ruth Prabhu), and just when Bindhu accepts his love after keeping him at a distance for 2 years, Sudeep (Sudeep) kills Nani as he cannot see himself lose. But the horror of Sudeep begins when Nani takes a re-birth in form of a fly 'eega'.

Its very unusual concept that instantly took my attention when I first saw it. And Rajamouli has directed as well as constructed amazing screenplay. He gets done with the love part (which are filmed in a fun and romantic way) very quickly, and leads to the difficulties Nani faces from being a human to a very small fly. How he slowly understands the ways he can use to get the revenge. Also special mention to the memory loss, which lasts for hardly 5 mins.

The reason this movie works a lot, is the fact that it gives large screen time to the 'Eega'(Makkhi) character. When you go to watch the film, it is the character you wanna see the most, and that's what has been done.

The VFX and graphic effects are excellent, special reference to the sequence where Eega make a entry, trying to fly through. Also, those tiny micro artist effects done on the eega like glasses, and foot equipments.

The Sudeep part before Nani dies, and the Nani-Bindhu love sequences hold high importance because if you don't connect to these two parts, then the revenge of Eega doesn't make any difference to you.

Sudeep's tone from the first scene is kept as a guy who knows how to get any girl he likes, with a eye on Bindhu.. his wife is the only exception whom he gives a terrible death. The frustration on his face when he comes to know Bindhu likes someone else. Then later, the way Sudeep enacts the part where he is again and again attacked by Eega. It mustn't had been easy as when the shooting would had happened, there would had been nothing in front of him, he just had to imagine and act it out. So, that makes it even more applaudable performance. The helmet presentation sequence, spa one, and car crash scene were among some of the best ones.

Also, the idea of writing 'I will kill you', 'I am back' and 'Re-birth' in different ways that a Eega would be able to write is commendable.

Bindhu likes doing micro artist activities, and that is later very well used to help Eega. Love the scene where a small house is built for Eega having all basic facilities. And the scene where she takes Eega to cafe coffee day is very funny.

The conversations between Nani and his friend during first 20 mins, or the way Sudeep hides how Eega is making his life hell in front of Bindhu, and the drunk thief sequence provide very good humour quotient to the movie. Also, the reactions of Eega when he wins a battle against Sudeep like the hit spray.

The songs are very well used, both the romantic ones, one is used mainly as background. Though, my fav is the title one, where Eega develops his powers with the help of Bindhu.

Overall, Eega works for me big time. We have seen enough films where re-birth of a person happens, but a re-birth of person into a fly is something new and unique. As long as you dont feel its a nonsense concept, this film is bound to make you laugh and enjoy every moment specially once Eega's entry comes. (for me the film works right from the first scene.. )

Oyy [Views]

My 2nd regional film. Took 2 years, to see 2nd one .. Again on a occasion, this time its KarvaChauth. ..

I wont say that I loved it as much as bommarillu. But I enjoyed it a lot, and it was very emotional too.

The story inspired by A walk to Remember. Its about how two people, Siddharth and Sharmili collide having different ways of living, different ways of seeing life. Its about love at first sight for Siddharth and then how he tries to succeed in it.

I only wish the female lead was someone else, she was a let down even though at many places she looked so cute with her spects but the places where she had to look beautiful or something, she lacked it. In a way, I felt she doesnt have the screen presence.

Aneways, Siddharth is the magic man in the film. Great performance, specially the one where he gets very emotional in hospital or the one in the climax.

I didnt like the side angles at all, its required in every film. But here, it was not gelling well with main plot. Abhishek angle was good, but it was stretched specially the scenes at ship were somewhat boring.

The screenplay was good, narration and all was impressive, with good quotient of humour that involves the lead pair. Songs are very well used, and I liked the music a lot too. Songs sung by karthik, kay kay, shreya, sunidhi. Yuvan as music composer is quite good, he composed few songs in Striker too.

The climax is very touchy, also love the 1st song where they establish two different thinking characters. Some great moments, like the 1st meeting of siddharth with sharmili or the plant scene or the night scene .. Or the two places at same time one. And few more ;) ..

Overall, Oyy is worth a watch for Siddharth mainly and the story which is somewhat emotional though not new.

Bommarillu Movie Analysis: Siddharth and Genelia shine

Movie Review of Bommarillu

One of the classic regional movies that you just cannot miss for Siddharth and Genelia D'Souza's excellent chemistry.

Directed by: Bommarillu Baskar
IMDb link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0843326/

"Anthena.  Inkem kaveli? Vellu aeithe nalugu maatallu kudhirithe cup coffee."

Siddharth and Genelia D'Souza in Bommarillu

Spoilers ahead...

I ended up watching my first regional film (Telugu). Initially, I was doubtful if I could even understand the film with subtitles. At the start of the film, I found it tough to adjust to the subtitles with the Telugu language of the actors. However, within a few minutes, I adjusted well and enjoyed the movie and the feel of the characters fully.

Plot: Siddu and His Dominating Father, Finds Love in Hasini

"Bommarillu" is a film about a guy named Siddu (Siddharth) who feels his father has complete control over his life—what he wears, how he eats, how he talks. He feels that his preferences are not valued; only his father's opinions matter. Despite this, Siddu decides that two things won't be decided by his father: his career and his love life. He wants his ideal girl to have many qualities, and one day he meets Hasini (Genelia D'Souza). He falls in love at first sight. Slowly, he develops a friendship with her, and they end up in love. However, Siddu is already engaged due to his father's wishes. When his father learns about Hasini, he asks Siddu to invite her to their home for seven days. If he cannot find a single fault in her, he will permit Siddu to marry Hasini.

Powerful Performances: Genelia's Lively Character and Her Chemistry with Siddharth

I loved how the characters of both Siddharth and Genelia are portrayed in the film. Genelia plays a chatterbox who keeps speaking without a pause, with a cute voice, very naughty, and unable to keep secrets. She makes friends with everyone, even the ice cream vendor and the golgappa seller. Her way of introducing herself: "Ha ha Hasini." Her phone codes: "Ring a Roses" or "Ring a Ring a Roses." The funniest habit of hers is the superstition that if someone's head strikes hers, she must strike it again intentionally, or that person will have horns on their head.

Siddharth plays the role of a sad guy in search of happiness, frustrated with things, and he finally finds that happiness in Hasini's love. His expressions work big time throughout the film. He dances well too, though I don't know much about South Indian movies and their dances.

Climax: Siddu's Father's Change of Heart Happens Too Rapidly

The climax scene, where Siddu expresses his feelings to his father, is impactful but somewhat unrealistic. In real life, such a sudden change of heart is rare. It usually takes time for such changes to happen.

Favorite Scenes: Involving Siddu and Genelia

The intermission scene is simply awesome, accompanied by the background sound of the song "Pari nishtha ga ma pa ni ni." (I can't write more Telugu words.) The ice cream scene is one of my favorites— love the expressions Siddharth and Genelia make during that scene. Then, their first head strike meeting, the bus joke, jumping off a moving bus, the coffee drinking style, the dinner table prayer scene, and many more.

Final Verdict: A Regional Movie You Must Watch at Least Once

Overall, "Bommarillu" is a wonderful romantic comedy film to watch with a dose of family drama, especially if it's your first regional film. You won't want a better film than this to start with. However, I wonder how Harman would play Siddharth's role in the Hindi remake.

And yes, I learned a few Telugu words too:

Go: Po
What: Yedpat
You: Nuvvu

My Rating: 8.5/10
