Watching classic movie on big screen is always special.

Sholay may not be among my all time favourites, yet I do enjoy watching it for the powerful performances, characters, writing, background music and songs.

Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) chooses two guys Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) to catch dangerous Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) alive.

The very first scene has a powerful dialogue, when Thakur replies to a police officer - 'Khota sikka toh dono taraf se khota hota hai', 'Insaan aur sikke mein shayad yehi fark hai'.

Personally, I enjoy Amitabh's performance the most along with Amjad Khan. Jai is quiet, yet expressive whenever he wants. His dialogue 'tumhara naam kya hai basanti' is hilarious. And the reveal of the coin secret at his death shocks everyone who sees the film first time.

Gabbar's entry comes after some 30 minutes, and he gets a splendid entry with his signature tune, 'kitne aadmi the', plus the laugh he gives before killing all the three. Amjad had that knack of being comical while being evil, which made his performance shine.

Jaya Bhaduri has just one dialogue scene, still she showcases such acting abilities in her silent scenes. Be it feeling scared when Amitabh is shot, or feeling broken when he dies.

Two favorite  themes for me, one when Jai plays mouth organ while Radha (Jaya Bhaduri) turns the lights off. And other when Thakur steps out of train, to see dead bodies near his house.

The side story of Imaam (A.K. Hangal) and Ahmed (Sachin) is well done too. Then there is Basanti's (Hema Malini) over talkative nature that highly entertains.

Cameos of Asrani (angrezo ke zameene ke jailor) and Jagdeep (hamara naam soorma bhopali aise hi nahi pada)  are quite funny.

Special mention to the scene where villagers are shown doing their work, and then enters the 3 daaku, that leaves villagers running away. How a drama can be built is very well told through this scene.

In Songs, my fav 'yeh dosti hum nahi todenge', and 'jab koi haseena rooth jaati hai'. Holi song and mehbooba are good too.

I prefer the climax where Gabbar is killed (I haven't seen that one, but assuming this must be other climax people talk of).

3D effects were nice, but then as you know by now.. I have yet to like a hindi movie that says to me this movie had to be made in 3d. Even in english movies, I haven't quite found that movie.

Sholay is a highly entertaining movie, that is rich in every technical department, with some evergreen dialogues.

Verdict : 4/5
