Mini Review : Passing and Mass (Netflix)

Passing

Directed by : Rebecca Hall

I am beginning to believe that no one is ever completely happy, free, or safe.

Spoilers ahead...

Based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen, Passing is about 2 mixed race women, one is Irene (Tessa Thompson) living as African-American who occasionally passes as 'white' while visiting retail stores, and is married to Brian (Andre Holland) with a son. While other is Clare (Ruth Negga) who permanently lives a lie of being 'white' married to a racist John (Alexander Skarsgard) and is scared for trying a child because it may get born black revealing her real identity. How lives of Irene and Clare changes when a chance encounter between them occurs at a hotel dining place.

Its a concept I wasn't aware existed actually, so did took a while to get used to. You can see how opposite both characters are, Irene is always worried someone will find her identity with that hat and scared eyes look while Clare is craving to live as black and a reason why she gets drawn to Irene's place in Harlem. The movie reminded me of 'One Night at Miami', the amount of tension constantly building and you are waiting for that moment when hell unleashes but unlike that movie, we never get that in 'Passing', rather we are given a very unusual strange ending that very much made no sense to me almost undoing all the good work done till then.

I loved the drama and tension of the scene in hotel when John arrives early and Irene finds out how much he hates black having no idea of her own wife's reality, also enjoyed the party sequences involving Clare-Hugh (Bill Camp) conversations and all the meetings that Clare and Irene have, or the closeness Clare builds with Brian leading to Irene having more thoughts building inside her who never looks comfortable when Clare is around. We are never told or shown any flashbacks regarding their friendship during school days. There are 1-2 scenes where subtle hint is thrown that they might be attracted towards each other in past, but its mostly left to imagination.  Both Ruth and specially Tessa gives very good performances. As a first time direction, Rebecca does a pretty decent work, I just wish the ending (even if its same in novel) wasn't where she headed and there were more conflicts thrown in the 2nd act that at times felt meandering along too much to my liking. I do like the fact that the film can be considered as a 'passing' by someone you aren't and not just limited to the 'color' as shown in this story. Worth a watch once.

My Rating : 6/10

Mass

Directed by : Fran Kranz

We believed we were good parents. And in some awful, confusing way, we still do.

Spoilers ahead...

Two couples, Jay (Jason Isaacs) and Gail (Martha Plimpton), Richard (Reed Birney) and Linda (Ann Dowd) agree to meet at an isolated basement room of a church so they can talk on a tragic incident that lead to the death of their sons. There was a mass shooting at school by son of Richard and Linda, Hayden who killed many other students including Evan, who was son of Jay and Gail. Clearly, there will be clash of opinions, one leaning on guilt and other on blame. I had not seen trailer or even read the story so going blind into the film meant I had to wait like 20 so minutes before it became clear what this meeting set up going on is about.

Its not an easy watch, simply because the topic this covers and as I have said many times before, the horror incident becomes even more horrific when told just by words without showing the visuals. Almost 95% of the movie takes place in that room, all 4 leads do commendable work, each of them getting their moments to put forward their thoughts, right or wrong, is ofcourse subjective, you can always take sides. The point is whose pain is deep, the parents whose son for no reason got killed or the parents who couldn't raise their son well enough to become a murderer, or maybe you can't really take a side here because 99% of times parents aren't really at fault.

Its a serious movie which is a reason why after some point I did wanted some respite, some fresh air which we don't really get here with the indoor room setting. Can't blame editing or pace much because you do need time given for all to speak out and not rush out putting their point of views. I didn't understand that outdoor shot they showed many times, and its shown in the last scene too, whatever meaning it had. Definately one of very good movies of last year, even if its not easy one to sit through with wonderful performances from all leads, specially Jason and Martha.

Spoilers ahead...

Parallel Mothers

Directed by : Pedro Almodovar

You have overcomplicated things.

Two mothers, Janis (Penelope Cruz) and Ana (Milena Smit) meet at a hospital where they share the room and about to give birth. Both are single, Janis is happy about it while Ana isn't. The background story of Janis wanting to excavate the mass grave related to her great-grandfather in the early years of Civil war is something I rather would had liked the main story on. Instead we get only starting and ending of film on it, while rest is how 2 parallel mothers cope with their newborns while the father and basically any other family help is absent. The coming closer to a relationship together angle specially didn't feel natural to me despite Penelope and Milena delivering very good performances. The screenplay and writing just doesn't keep you hooked to it. Decent one time watch.

My Rating : 5/10

King Richard

Directed by : Reinaldo Marcus Green

The most strongest, the most powerful, the most dangerous creature on this whole earth is a woman who knows how to think. Ain't nothing she can't do.

A biopic on Richard Williams (Will Smith), father of young Serena Williams (Demi Singleton) and Venus Williams (Saniyya Sidney). The story is based on the William sisters preteen journey to the 14 year old Venus playing her 1st Pro tournament as their father Richard coaches them with all the support always from their mother Oracene Brandy Williams (Aunjanue Ellis).

What makes this a very good watch is how the focus is always on Richard and his plans, which he feels he got before the birth of Serena-Venus knowing they will scale the stardom and get the legends tag one day. He is not a easy character to like at many places, very stubborn to the extent he gets called by one coach as someone more stubborn than John McEnroe. And thats a reason why I enjoy those outbursts scenes of Oracene, one where she isn't happy that Richard takes decisions about their daughters without involving her, and other when she lets Richard realize he is going overboard being a protective father and not letting Venus decide things. That Cindrella movie scene was hilarious and so was the way Richard interrupts McEnroe-Sampras match just so he could show how good his daughters can hit tennis balls and deserve a coach to go to the next level. The tennis scenes are well shot, and the drama is created nicely through the cuts to the crowd, Richard or others.

I also learnt that the toilet break misuse happened then too, the way Vicario took away the momentum from a match Venus was winning. Will Smith delivers a smashing (not referring to his Oscars slap) performance, even if too stubborn or not likeable at some moments, you just could feel he is a father trying to get the best for his daughters knowing its not easy for their gender, color and how cruel the world can be. Totally enjoy his mannerisms, the walks, habit of not looking at live match but just using sound of balls to know who won the point (God that is so me or many other tennis fans who do it unable to bear the tension of watching someone you love lose). Also, love his scene with Serena telling it was part of his plan to keep her in the shadow of Venus. And Aunjanue Ellis is also excellent in her support act, love her reply to the neighbour who tries to interfere un-necessarily with Williams family, or how she helps Serena get the ball toss right. Even the casting of William Sisters or the other players, coaches felt very good to me. Its good to see they used all the real names and not funny madeup ones, something our biopics need to look at (I am pointing finger at Saina biopic here).

In the end, King Richard is a very good movie with great performances, and I say that for someone who isn't a fan of William Sisters (specially Serena) at all. And I love the end, didn't try to show Venus with a win.. rather a loss and learn how she still gained fans for the way she played. You can ofcourse use the text lines telling how many achievements they both had, for the people who don't follow tennis.

My Rating : 7.5/10

House of Gucci

Directed by : Ridley Scott

Can you keep a secret ?
Father, Son and House of Gucci.

Inspired from true events, a crime-drama about the Italian fashion Gucci family. Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) who is an outsider falls in love with Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) leading to Maurizio's father Rodolfo Gucci (Jeremy Irons) to disown him citing Patrizia is after their money. However, Maurizio's uncle, Aldo Gucci (Al Pacino) brings him back into the family business as the story follows what happens next.

The first thing you would notice when you start watching (if not seen the trailer) the movie would be the accent, takes a while to adjust to it. As much as I loved Lady Gaga's performance who is a delight to watch in this role, her accent on many occasions was distracting, maybe a reason why she didn't get an Oscar nomination. The film tries to show too much in limited time, leading to many rushed plots including an ending on the murder that just happens and movie ends. Maybe a 8-9 episode series would had served the story better purpose along with ofcourse actors without an accent bothering all the time.

Its quite clear to me that Patrizia had her eyes on the money, tough to make out if she also loved Maurizio at same time or not, did seem the money drived her lot more. Adam Driver in restrained performance is good as always, Al Pacino is wonderful whose accent looked spot on, so is Jeremy Irons whose only scene with son of Aldo, Paolo Gucci (Jared Leto) is hilarious. Unfortunately, an unrecognisable Jared Leto with his makeup doesn't transform into a great performance, rather felt he was over-exaggerating the character making it little boring. In the end, House of Gucci is watchable, but it misses its mark for all the mentioned reasons.

My Rating : 5/10

The Lost Daughter

Directed by : Maggie Gyllenhaal

I am an unnatural mother.

Leda (Olivia Colman) who is a middle-aged English professor arrives at a beach resort in Greece for a holiday all alone. She very soon gets obsessed with a family involving a young mother Nina (Dakota Johnson), her husband Toni (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and their daughter. The reason is that Leda is taken to a memory lane of her unsettling past when she herself was a young mother and how unusual she used to act then. Leda has no idea how this holiday will turn out to be very haunting one for her.

The key for a film that involves a character's current timeline and flashback timeline running together is to make you like both of them almost equally which is where Lost Daughter faulters for me. I got so engaged and interested in the young Leda (Jessie Buckley) version while whenever Olivia's version would come, I would only be wanting those scenes to end quickly. Jessie Buckley is fantastic in portraying a character that's tough to imagine, a mom who wants her own life even at expense of not being what you would expectedly call 'A Responsible Mom'. Its a very thin line, some might still complain and say she had no right to be wanting those desires because being a mother makes you have your children as first priority. I like how that concept and many more is explored but when it came to Olivia Colman who is another brilliant performer, I felt she got stuck with the thoughts of past and there's too much of her walking through beach or observing others scenes or her obsession with Nina daughter's doll that kept on dragging rather than serving any purpose. In short, I wasn't able to connect both Leda which should had happened here. Its just the Jessie Buckley's act that worked for me and a good supporting act by Dakota Johnson in otherwise a very underwhelming movie.

My Rating : 6/10

The Tragedy of Macbeth

Directed by : Joel Coen

Stars, hide your fires. Let not light see my black and deep desires.

Story is known to everyone. The only Macbeth adaptation I have seen before is 'Maqbool'. The Tragedy of Macbeth has Denzel Washington (as Macbeth) and Frances McDormand (as Lady Macbeth) comprising the main roles, both delivering lovely performances. My favourite however was the Kathryn Hunter (as the Witches). The movie gives a festival oriented feels to me, all the treatment with the camera, cinematography, or the black and white setting. The Shakespearean language used directly is another reason why the movie fails to work for me. Just a personal taste, the same story told in different way with same actors would appeal better for me.

My Rating : 3/10

Nightmare Alley

Directed by : Guillermo del Toro

When a man believes his own lies, starts believing that he has the power, he's got shuteye.

A mysterious burning down of house opens out the film as Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) comes across a travelling carnival where he accepts a job of carny offered to him. He slowly learns and examines various acts and gets attracted towards one of the performer Molly Cahill (Rooney Mara). Stanton offers her a proposal of 2 act show away from the carnival for a better future.

One of those films where the supporting cast outdo the leads by a long way. Willem Dafoe (as Clem Hoatley) is wonderful as a guy who exploits needy guys in places like nightmare alleys to become a future geek (alive human but acting like a beast sort). The whole story where Clem tells Stanton how he lures them into it makes you wonder if at all Stanton would have this fate too one day, the answer you get in the final epic scene. There's the brilliant Toni Collette (as Zeena) who warns Stanton with her tarot cards about the wrong dangerous road he is taking which he doesn't listen to. Cate Blanchett (as Dr. Lilith Ritter) provides that mysterious element not knowing what her intentions are, and ofcourse seductive as always in her ways. Richard Jenkins (as Ezra Grindle) despite having a small cameo and a role of somewhat bad person still infuses so much emotions into it. David Strathairn (As Pete), the alcoholic husband of Zeena delivers the best performance of the movie again a character having small screen time, and the one whose act Stanton is most keen to learn or steal. Rooney Mara and Bradley Cooper are the ones that disappoint, most of 2nd and final act involve them, specially Bradley felt like going through the motions in a character that I felt required more emotions than be little too quiet to my liking, the greed and angle of playing almost a God didn't come through. He does get the final scene pretty right but not enough to save from the rest of the performance. Also, I can't forget that gross scene involving a geek eating an alive chicken. Aneways, Nightmare Alley works in patches, mostly due to very good supporting acts.

My Rating : 5.5/10

Belfast

Directed by : Kenneth Branagh

Be good. And if you can't be good, Be careful!

Set in Belfast of late 1960s, a working class family consists of a 9 year old Buddy (Jude Hill) living with his elder brother Will (Lewis McAskie), father Pa (Jamie Dornan) and mother Ma (Caitriona Balfe). The backdrop is of the rising tension between Catholics and Protestants leading to the dilemna of how long can Buddy and his family stay in this environment. The violence is limited to the opening riots scene and the climax one. Told through the pov of Buddy, we rather get to see his adventures and desires while living in a place with military around and curfew imposed. Jude Hill will keep a smile on your face all the time, whether its his attempts to impress Catherine (Olive Tennant), the girl from school he wanna marry one day, or the things he steals when forced to rob at stores by his cousin, or the conversations he has with Granny (Judi Dench) and Grandpa (Ciaran Hinds). Both Judi Dench (that fantastic final heartbreaking scene) and Ciaran Hinds (love the maths cheating suggestion he gives along with many other advices) are a delight to watch. The soundtrack is another good highlight of the movie. Caitriona Balfe does get some scenes to shine through too specially where she insists not to change home having all attachments in here. I am happy they keep the arguements of Jamie and Caitriona to a limit, its the part of story that I didn't enjoy much. If you are looking for a hardhitting movie then probably this won't work, I actually prefer this treatment, that gives you an overview of history but rather keeps the proceedings light.

My Rating : 7.5/10

Dune

Directed by : Denis Villeneuve

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings obliteration. I will face my fear and I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past... I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Based on Frank Herbert's famous sci-fi novel of 1965, the story is about planet Arrakis (a place for spice growth) whose control has been given to House Atreides by the Emperor while their powerful rival House Harkonnen has been asked to leave to their home planet. Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) arrives on Arrakis along with his wife Lady Jessica Atreides (Rebecca Ferguson), son Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) and his army. The things aren't as simple as it looks, with a betrayal on cards and Paul still struggling to come to terms with all the dreams he has and him being considered as 'The One'.

To be honest I was expecting this to be a very boring movie, firstly because of the trailer that worked only for the visuals and secondly because I totally felt bored in Denis last movie too 'Blade Runner 2049'. So it comes off as a major surprise that I liked the movie and even loved it at some places. Everything together from the cast to the Hans Zimmer music (not among his best though), gorgeous visuals contribute to it, specially the narration I felt was very engaging and didn't really felt slow. Having not read the book or seen previous films on this also helped with no expectations.

Rebecca with another strong performance and Timothee for most parts doing well, just his physique for action sequences felt little odd to me which may come more in 2nd part. I love the scene where he is being tested if he really should be 'The One', or the plane scene where he tries to use his powers for first time knowing he hasn't mastered them yet but its a chance required to be taken. Enjoyed the way Arrakis planet is shown and the dangerous sandworms that requires you to walk in a certain dance manner (felt comical watching it) so they don't detect you. I actually liked Jason Momoa (playing Duncan Idaho) more in this movie than I did in Aquaman (Sorry to his fans). Josh Brolin (playing Gurney Halleck) I think will get more to do in next part if I am correct he is alive, can't recall his death scene shown.

Dune works as a adventurous film mostly for me, those helicopters shapes or the sandstorms that may bring sandworms along and also how slowly Paul is learning his role in all this and ofcourse the brilliant visuals. The mystery angle of Chani (Zendaya) is also nicely mixed around the narration, again she will have lot more to do in next part. Stellan Skarsgard (playing Baron Vladimir Harkonnen) gives a haunting effect in the fewer scenes he is in, specially the scene where he is almost floating to other side or the one where he is recovering from the attack he suffered. Definately little low when it comes to emotions, which is kind of expected given how much material movie is trying to show-off, yet I felt satisfied for large portions of the movie. The end scene does remind you of Baahubali a lot (couldn't help myself using the reference).  In the end, Dune will work only if while watching you feel being part of this adventure, otherwise you may struggle finishing the movie.

Mini Review : Halloween Kills and The Conjuring 3 : The Devil Made Me Do It (AmazonPrime)

Halloween Kills

Directed by : David Gordon Green

Michael Myers has haunted this town for 40 years. Tonight, we hunt him down.

Spoilers ahead..

Follows the story of 2018 Halloween as Michael Myers is still alive and everyone in the Haddonfield town come together chanting 'Evil dies tonight'. We also get to see footage of many characters from original 1978 movie that came in contact with Michael in someway, now fully grownup wanting to put an end to this.

Its a total mess of a movie, more than silly its actually dumb which surprises me because the last movie was actually pretty good even though it wasn't a match to the original. Feels like the writing team got too busy deciding various gore killing options Michael will have for the many many kills we get to see, and hence the title. There's just no proper fear built-up, most of the random people that die actually deserve to die way they act. The team-up that involves the people which suffered in the 1978 halloween night, you expect them to have a plan and initially they give hopes that Yes these folks know what they doing, but nope, rather they come out even more dumber, either shooting at Michael without aiming properly or too busy chanting 'Evil dies tonight'. Also, haven't we had enough movies for the people or atleast those who came in contact with Myers to understand that he doesn't die from bullets, from fire, from knife and yet thats how they want to kill him everytime. This actually makes me wonder how exactly will he die in the final film because there doesn't seem any proper explanation.

I was thinking maybe it will take the death of Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) for Michael's killings to end but this film actually ends that possibility suggesting its not Laurie that Michael is after. Also, its a blessing in a way that we get to see very less of Jamie Lee Curtis in this movie probably keeping her  for the final showdown whatever they planned. That hospital scene where every person turns together to kill an innocent man thinking its Michael with the chants again of 'Evil ends tonight' was the best way to describe how bad this movie is, they couldn't even show the theme of 'Innocent people turning into monsters like Michael' properly. Also, why would a gay couple continue to live in the Michael Myers home when he has returned that night or do they don't hear any news?

In the end, Halloween Kills just fails at everything it tries, whether its trying to link all previous movies or bring the town together or make Michael go on a rampage killing. If you are a fan of gore horror, maybe you would have little to enjoy then, for rest like me this was a pain to sit through and yet a part of me is hoping the finale won't be this bad.

My Rating : 3/10

The Conjuring 3 : The Devil Made Me Do It

Directed by : Michael Chaves

Being brave doesn't mean you are not scared. It means you are scared but you hang in there.

The third movie in this Conjuring franchise that starts with exorcism but leads to a historic event in the court when a murder suspect pleads for non-guilty citing reasons as demonic possession. The first scene gives you regular vibe of the franchise you are used to until the twist happens and the plot rather than the usual haunted house moves more into a thriller investigation against time involving witchcraft and Satan. Its an engaging movie but despite that I didn't really feel the tension or the kind of mood I got in last 2 films, even the scares or jump-scares landed pretty flat for most of the occasions. I do like the scene where Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) go into the high school girl case history into the forest along with that detective. Ed-Lorraine love story like the 2nd film again is given more importance which I feel they are overdoing. The evil vs Warrens isn't as effective or I should say chilling like the past 2 films was. Patrick and Vera are however again very good, and so is Ruairi O Connor who plays the guy possessed or affected by the Satan power. Did miss direction of James Wan, this is decent addition to the franchise but falls very short of the good work done earlier. The best thing I can say is that despite lack of memorable moments, its not a bad movie which mostly a 3rd movie of any franchise is.

Movie Analysis : BellBottom (AmazonPrime)

Directed by : Ranjit Tewari

Maa hamesha kehti thi ki, life mein backup ka bhi backup hona chahiye.

Spoilers ahead..

Its mid 1980s, a time when we are told planes getting hijacked was becoming a norm. One such incident the film is based on when a RAW analyst Anshul Malhotra/Bellbottom (Akshay Kumar) is given the task to rescue 210 hostages.

The film reminded me of 'Tashan' for the good reason that they both have brilliant catchy tone you could hear all day long, and for the bad reason that this is also not a good movie. But unlike that one, Bellbottom does have its moments.

1st half has too much of Anshul's mother and love interest Radhika Malhotra (Vaani Kapoor), though you can argue that the reason he joins RAW is because of what happens to his mother. I have no idea how true this event is or any of what is shown in the movie. Even the way Anshul gets approached to work for RAW felt silly but I would still take that. Its the 2nd half specially the plans laid out that don't really happen, rather what we get is just a sandstorm staged amateurish looking action sequence where Anshul turns it around over the hijackers.

Akshay Kumar as always is good in a role that suits him a lot. Vaani Kapoor is merely for the looks here, I do love the twist at the end but then it would had worked better if she was more involved in the narrative. Lara Dutta is wonderful, the work done on her makeup and looks making her appear so close to Indira Gandhi and she very much gets the act right too. Adil Hussain is wonderful in his performance as expected. Among the hijackers actors, only Zain Khan Durrani leaves a mark, I had loved him in 'Kuchh Bheege Alfaaz too' (you should see the film if you are a romantic).

BellBottom I would only remember for that 'Dhoom Tara' theme, it had great potential had they showed more of the planning or the heroics not limited to a one sandstorm which also they didn't pull out well. Instead director took the familiar route of melodrama, over the top patriotism with dialogues like 'Abki baar' (you know who I am talking of) and the never ending caricature way of showing the neighbouring nation.

Movie Analysis : Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (Netflix)

Directed by : Abhishek Kapoor

Main jo hoon woh hoon, and I am not ashamed of it.

Spoilers ahead..

It all feels like a regular rom-com when Manvinder Munjal/Manu (Ayushmann Khurrana), a body builder from Chandigarh meets Maanvi Brar (Vaani Kapoor), a Zumba teacher and eventually falls in love. But the surprise comes when Manu learns Maanvi is actually a transgender.

I don't remember any film made on a transgender before as a lead, rather the fun of eunuchs is a regular thing in our movies. So, this is a very fresh take done in a safe but right manner by Abhishek Kapoor who had been off the mark in his last two films but here he does find himself showing signs of returning back to his best.

There are issues, like what was the need for Manu to talk to eunuch to realize his mistake when he was slowly through the online videos starting to feel the guilt. Also, the unwanted Manu's father involved with a Muslim lady angle to give comic relief. And when will we get over the obsession of wanting our lead hero to magically succeed in something in the climax at which he has been failing badly till date, because the inspiration, his love is present in there. Sometimes, just trying is enough too!

Two standout scenes for me were, one where Manu reacts to the reality of Maanvi, totally shocked and saying things he shouldn't have. And the other where Maanvi gets angry over Manu at the Mall getting fed up of watching him behave like an idiot.

In the Music, 'Kalle Kalle' is my favourite, also loved 'Attraction' and 'Maafi'. Even the dance numbers are enjoyable, easily one of very good album that I have heard probably since Love Aaj Kal if my memory serves right.

Ayushmann Khurrana is good, the fact that its a Punjabi background character always makes me happy that he played it, making it feel much real. But, its Vaani Kapoor who steals the show here, probably her best performance since the ever impressive debut in 'Shuddh Desi Romance', you just feel like she gave her all in this act whether its the scene where she is in dilemmna while filling social app gender status, or her habit of checking herself in mirror trying to remind herself that she is a girl now or when she is bold enough to stand for herself and not run-away knowing how the society won't accept her.

Also loved all scenes involving Maanvi and her father (Kanwaljeet Singh), the way he supports her all the time unlike her mother. Maybe in some years we would get a darker take of how more tough it would be when parents oppose you too.

Nice to see Chak de fame Tanya Abrol playing sister of Manu, the dialect and character personality though felt very similar.

In the end, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a step in the right direction for a film based on transgender, its got flaws and doesn't take the dark route but I would rather appreciate it for trying and giving some nice moments to enjoy.

Mini Review : Aftermath (Netflix)

Directed by : Peter Winther

Why are you so concerned with everyone else's feelings but mine?

Spoilers ahead..

A young couple Kevin Dadich (Shawn Ashmore) and Natalie Dadich (Ashley Greene) who have been going through bits in their relationship decide to start a fresh by taking a deal on a home which just recently had a horrific incident involving death of a couple.

The film follows the horror cliches to scare you, which I would have gladly taken if not for turning the film around as a 'stalker living in the house' rather than a ghost oriented haunted movie. I have told this before too, it irritates me when I see useless time wasted because one person (mostly the man) among the couple won't believe the other one is actually experiencing something and isn't some hallucination.

Also, I felt sorry for Natalie's sister who should had stuck to her beliefs and not been around the house to get herself killed. The opening scene murder suspense is easy to guess who did it the moment you meet the owner of the house with whom Dadich's get the deal done, the lady owner being the sister of the guy who got killed or is said to have killed himself after killing his wife.

To be honest if I was to see the film for what it is, it still won't work for me, I just find it stupid for what the guy does living in the house to scare and kill people.

Barring few decent scares, Aftermath offers nothing at all.

Quick Views - Oscar 2022 Films Part1

When the Oscar Noms were out, I had not seen even one of the films nominated. Here's my quick views on all the films. Some deserved to be there, and some are as always poor picks for reasons only the academy knows.

Spoilers ahead..

Don't Look Up

Directed by : Adam Mckay

We really did have everything, didn't we? I mean, when you think about it.

Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student along with her professor Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) discover a comet that is on direct collision course with Earth and there's only some months time left to do something or the planet Earth will be destroyed. The probem however is, when Kate and Dr Mindy go on to warn people, no one cares, and that includes the President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her son, also the Chief of Staff, Jason Orlean (Jonah Hill), or the media where Brie Evantee (Cate Blanchett) one of the host that interviews both Kate-Dr Mindy, is rather more interested in her growing lust for Dr Mindy and even makes out by asking him to say the words 'We are going to die'.

Usually satire dark comedy movies are my favourites, this one didn't really entertain me. Possible reasons could be that it got tiring to see crazy President, media and citizens all unwilling to open their eyes and see the disaster coming their way. I feel maybe director went little overboard with the concept, though I do agree many people exist who are this crazy to ignore a simple warning given to them from professionals. Think the intention was to draw parallels with global warming, you could also connect same movie with 'Covid idiots' (ones who believed Covid was never real, who knows if those ppl still live in the delusion). The craze people have over celebrities than any other important news is pretty well captured though it was irritating to watch for obvious reasons.

Both Meryl and Jonah (who I believe were portraying Donald Trump and his Chief of Staff) felt hammy to me. I enjoyed Leonardo a lot and so did Jennifer who clearly was a character that echoes most of us viewing this film as to why the hell people are so ignorant. However the show stealer for me was Mark Rylance whose dialogue delivery style was so hilarious that for a moment I had to pause the film and think if he's really doing that. I am happy that his prediction over death of President Orlean turned true and Dr Randall one didn't. One complaint I had was over editing, the abrupt cutting off a scene that hasn't finished to move to next happens way too often, if its a style he follows then certainly it effected my movie viewing too often. Overall, 'Don't Look Up' gives some good laughs but its very underwhelming given the great starcast it boasted off, I certainly wanted lot more than what I got.

My Rating : 6/10

The Power of the Dog

Directed by : Jane Campion

Bronco Henry told me that a man was made by patience in the odds against him.

Set in 1925, with the backdrop of Montana where brothers Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) own a cattle ranch. During one of their cattle drives, while dining at a restaurant they come across waitress Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst) and her son Peter Gordon (Kodi Smit-McPhee). George soon falls in love with Rose and marries her, but Phil who hardly likes anyone isn't happy when Rose comes to their place after marriage. Rose has no idea how badly her and her son's life may get affected with the non-accepting nature of Phil.

I liked the initial scenes of Rose and George, also the drive one when they are heading home. It felt like the movie will keep their relation going rather the plot shifts totally towards Phil's equation with Rose eventually leading to her mental state being disturbed while George almost goes missing for large portion. The Peter-Phil bonding didn't really work for me. Infact Benedict Cumberbatch for once I found very boring. Every year there's always one film that despite being a well made movie never clicks for me like it does with others, for instance 'The Theory of Everything', 'Moonlight', '1917', 'Nomadland' to name a few, and 'The Power of Dog' joins that list. Overrated to my liking, though happy its not got a high rating at Imdb. Except for the 1st act and that too in patches, I couldn't enjoy or feel anything in this film.

Being the Ricardos

Directed by : Aaron Sorkin

I am Lucille Ball. When I am being funny, you will know it.

A biopic that follows lives of  Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and her husband Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) when they are shooting for their famous show 'I Love Lucy' at a time when Lucille is pregnant and wants that included in the final episodes of the show. There's also a newspaper article that has termed Lucy as a communist which may effect everyone's lives and also a matter of Lucille feeling that Desi is having an affair. I really enjoyed watching all behind the scenes we are shown of the 'I Love Lucy' show where Lucille tries to dominate and control the proceedings. Its fun watching how she in her mind creates those black and white visualisation of the scene, how she gets so picky to have a scene done the way she wants. Also, the sexism at display and this being a 1950s based movie, a time when clearly women who won't try to say something won't be able to put over their point which clearly Lucille was doing. Unfortunately though, whenever the narrative went towards Lucille-Desi marriage, or their flashbacks, it just felt too average and dull. I don't know if its the writing to blame entirely, or maybe Javier Bardem wasn't right choice to play Desi. Nicole Kidman though was very good, even if I won't say it was among her great performances of past. Overall, 'Being the Ricardos' works in patches mainly the television drama and creative arguements that take place between leads, supporting actors, producers and the directors, maybe the entire story could had stayed on it only.

Coming 2 America

Directed by : Craig Brewer

Walk your own path. Be not the prince of Zamunda. Be the prince from Queens.

Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) goes to America with Semmi (Arsenio Hall) after learning he has a son (bastard son as they call it) Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler). Akeem's father recent demise means he will be the new king of Zamunda and the throne of new prince as per their outdated rules can't go to his 3 daughters so its important to find his son Lavelle and avoid the threat of General Izzi (Wesley Snipes) who would rather wanna take the place. I haven't seen the original film whose sequel this is. There are some funny scenes, mostly involving Lavelle specially when he comes to Zamunda and tries to fit in or learn what tests he has to pass to become a Princi that involves a walk, a tiger sequence and much more. Lets be clear, from the first scene onwards you can see its a very bad film, yet it had in it to be a guilty pleasure film if not for too many of gross scenes or humour that just is hard to enjoy. The love angle of Lavelle with hairstylist is predictable but still gives some nice moments. Morgan Freeman special appearance is very forgetabble and the daughter of General Izzi I am not sure what that was, kind of speechless. Maybe I would give the original movie a chance in future, this one is easily avoidable if you haven't seen yet.

Cruella

Directed by : Craig Gillespie

They say there are five stages of grief. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Well, I would like to add one more. Revenge.

Estella (Emma Stone), since teenage time wanted to be a fashion designer. At 12 after losing her mother, she reaches London and befriends two amateur thieves Jasper (Joel Fry) and Holace (Paul Walter Hauser). After 10 years, with help of Jasper.. Estella lands herself a chance to work at a popular fashion designing place and later on leading to work with The Baroness (Emma Thompson). Just when it looked like she was winning the heart of her new boss, she learns about a deep secret related to her mother's death and her alter ego Cruella De Vil is born who will leave no stone unturned to seek revenge.

Its an interesting film, one that I didn't feel I would like, having no idea about who Cruella was so it was a new territory for me. We see Estella with half head hairs white and other half black, and then her new name having 'De Vil' aka 'Devil'. The way Cruella sabotages every fashion event of The Baroness is fun and stylish specially that garbage sequence. But it all comes at the expense of not caring for the loved ones, as both Jasper and Holace could feel Estella has changed a lot. Revenge comes at a price, making Cruella dislikeable character even when we are enjoying her little wins over The Baroness. Emma Stone does a commendable job, while Emma Thompson on the  other hand was so so for me, didn't quite work out. The costumes and songs choices were another plus point of the movie. Overall, Cruella is one of those films that you will like and dislike at same time, good enough though to pass time.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Directed by : Michael Showalter

And remember, never forget it. You know what I am going to say. God loves you. He really, really, really does.

A biopic on the televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain) that shows her rise and eventual fall into PTL scandals and much more. One of those films that I saw to know a part of history rather than actually been interested in it with all the God religion angle. For me both lead characters were very dislikeable, Tammy atleast shows human side on many occasions, specially the aids scene or her views towards the LGBT that is brought out often. Also, you can't help but feel its her blind faith in her husband Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield) that mostly resulted in the life she had because he clearly all the while was interested to be on camera and become wealthy with the 'God wants' angle always a joke or atleast it appeared so. Jessica was highly unrecognisable for me in this role, and even though I love her a lot.. I still feel this isn't the film I would had liked her to win Oscar. On the other hand Andrew Garfield for once was highly irritating, and again its not his performance issues but a character that you just don't wish to see at all. 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye' is watchable, its just not a film that I could like.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Directed by : Destin Daniel Cretton

Lead with your breathe. Look into your heart, the light and the dark. To know yourself, you must face them both.

Xu Wenwu (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung) leads an organisation called Ten Rings and always lusts for more power until he meets Li (Fala Chen) falling in love at first sight. But Li's death one day makes Wenwu return to his old ways even more deadly than before seeking revenge of his wife's death. Wenwu's children Shaun (Simu Liu) and Xialing (Meng'er Zhang) grow apart from him, while Shaun along with his friend Katy (Awkwafina) work as a valet. Wenwu sends his men to find Shaun as he believes Li is still alive and kept trapped by her own people in a place called Ta Lo.

Two action sequences totally standout, one is where Wenwu meets Li first time resulting in a martial arts kind duel.. have to admit it reminded a lot of the Baahubali scene between Prabhas and Tamannah but this one worked lot better for me specially because Wenwu who felt immortal finally met someone with more powers than him. And other scene ofcourse is the bus one where Shaun fights with men of his father and Katy learns the real identity of Shaun. Sadly, the rest action sequences comes nowhere close and the climax was a total misfire for me. The story however works a lot, whether its the part where both Shaun and his sister Xialing feel neglected eventually leading them to run away at a teen age from their home. Or the part where Shaun feels changing name is enough to run away from his family or how Shaun's aunt Ying Nan (a brilliant Michelle Yeoh) tells him how he has to let go things to really succeed.

The scenes between Li and young Shaun are very touching and play key role to the emotional side of the movie. Simu Liu is good as the first Asian lead of MCU universe, though he doesn't have that screen presence or confidence I would have liked but I will still give him chance in future films. Awkwafina is hilarious and too good, she reminds me of Michael Pena from Antman, the energy way I mean. Though I found that last scene where Shaun is welcomed to the Avengers along with Katy as pretty stupid, I mean she hardly did anything and that arrow shoot was just a fluke. Aneways,  its Tony Chiu-Wai Leung who steals the show, in every frame he is so good in displaying all variety of emotions, I felt bad that he had to die in the end, he may have gone wrong direction but in love everyone does it, wish they kept him alive. Overall, Shang-Chi is a good addition to the MCU universe, minus a very poor CGI based final fight that ruined the movie a little, still entertaining enough to be seen and certainly better than Captain Marvel.. I will still rate it below Doctor Strange (yet to see Black Widow).

Cyrano

Directed by : Joe Wright

Have you ever wanted something so badly you cannot breathe? Have you ever loved someone madly?

Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) is not only brilliant at swordplay but is wonderful with words coming up with great poems. He has always been in love with his friend Roxanne (Haley Bennett) but always feels he's not good looking to get her approval. Finally he decides to tell his feelings only to find Roxanne herself has fallen in love at first sight with Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr) who is a new recruit in Cyrano's guardsmen. I haven't seen this play or read the story before, but the main plot of a friend helping another guy get the girl they both love has been done many times. Yet that scene where Cyrano is so happy and excited only to be heartbroken moments later works wonderfully. Infact Peter Dinklage performance was worthy of a Oscar nomination, maybe its his singing that let that not happen, otherwise his acting and expressions of a person in deep love were very spot on.

My issues with film rather was firstly the story post the death of Christian, it kind of goes nowhere and that end didn't work for me even if thats how its in the play. And other main problem I had was the backdrop of war and battle looming, that just wasn't used in a way that it keeps the romantic plot going. Also, what was that scene where Cyrano gets through a army of men without getting killed. And I get the point behind that long song of the men at war reading the letters of their loved ones (a kind of Sandhey se aate hai from Border), but in a film that has Cyrano-Roxanne-Christian love story, this track just feels like a hiccup more than to invoke feelings. I enjoyed Haley Bennett act, while Kelvin was so-so to me. In a musical, the songs need to be really good.. here they work well with the narrative specially 'Madly' and 'Wherever I fall' but they aren't tracks you would otherwise listen to.  Cyrano is a decent watch, that mainly works for Peter Dinklage performance.

Spencer

Directed by : Pablo Larrain

Well here, there is only one tense. There is no future. The past and the present are the same thing.

Its 1991, Christmas weekend when Diana Spencer (Kristen Stewart) who has been struggling with her mental health joins the Royal family at their Norfolk estate. The entire plot revolves around Diana feeling trapped and not willing to go through all the routines that one expects from her, whether its about what dress at what time of the day she must wear, what she must eat, where she must go or not go etc etc. At one stage her husband even warns her to get her act together and try to manage 2 lives because thats the only way to survive. I personally felt very tired watching Diana throughout the movie go through what she does, from her hallucinations to the unsuccessful attempts to breakfree, and also I wasn't fully sold by the performance of Kristen Stewart though some of that has to do with the fact that I have never seen Princess Diana footage in real before. If you are able to manage these 2 issues then most likely Spencer will work a lot better for you. The scenes of Diana with her children were kind of respite I wanted, giving some nice lighthearted moments. Mostly I prefer a biopic that rather shows a particular event of person's life then show the entire span in chronological order but Spencer still ends up as a mediocre movie for me.

Free Guy

Directed by : Shawn Levy

Don't have a good day, have a great day.

Guy (Ryan Reynolds) lives a same loop kind of life starting from waking up to greeting the fish Goldie to choosing a blue shirt, some routine happenings on the way to bank where he works that ultimately results into heist scenario. He is happy with his friend Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) until a chance encounter happens with Millie (Jodie Comer) when he feels she is the girl he had been all the time dreaming of his entire life. But, Guy is not aware yet that he is actually a NPC (non playing character) and its a video game 'Free City' he is living his life in, not a real world.

I quite enjoyed the movie mainly for Ryan Reynolds who always cracks you up whether he is playing Deadpool or not. Also, the other star of movie is Jodie Comer who is brilliant in every frame whether its the part she plays inside the game or the real world where she is trying to prove that the game actually has her and her friend Keys (Joe Keery) codes used without any mention by Antwan (Taika Waititi) for whom Keys actually works for now. Taika Waititi was highly irritating character for me and Joe Keery I felt got too sidelined as a result his romantic angle never really worked for me. Another issue I found was the film doesn't try to tackle the toxic environment these kind of games have, rather presents it as something fun and entertaining to enjoy. I am not much into Gaming or specially these kind of simulation games, so did felt little confused at places. Yet, I won't deny Free Guy is a good movie to sit through, some of the visual effects are appealing, jokes on Hulk-Captain America comeby too, a wonderful action sequence involving Guy and Millie on bike, plus there are few moving moments too involving Guy specially.
