Movie Analysis : Filmistaan

Directed by : Nitin Kakkar
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2417560/

A wanna-be actor Sunny (Sharib Hashmi), works as an A.D and dreams of becoming the next big star. He goes to Rajasthan with an american crew to work on a documentary. One day an Islamic terrorist group mistakenly kidnaps Sunny instead of the american crew, and brings him to Pakistan. They keep him as hostage until they could locate the american crew. Sunny is put at a house which belongs to a Pakistani Aftaab (Inaamul Haq), who is in business of hindi films piracy and always brings  plenty of cds while returning back from border, that he shows his villagers to watch. Sunny and Aftaab instantly share a bond with the common interest of cinema, but will this bond be strong enough to cope with the terrorist who is always guarding Sunny from escaping.

In the 1st half, we see Sunny speaking plenty of bollywood dialogues, mimicry, he’s like a chalta phirta cinema radio who can use a filmi dialogue in even a serious situation, like the ‘mard ko kabhi dard nahi hota’ or he trying to teach kids how actors would shoot a gun differently using the gun of terrorist.  Sunny is very over the top, so you could easily understand why he fails to make any of the auditions, and in one very good scene he himself tells Aftaab about how he thinks about his acting skills. But, its his friendly and always trying to be happy avatar that impresses you.

One of the most funniest scene of movie comes when Sunny directs the recording of his kidnapping himself and goes for plenty of re-takes as he believes no matter what you are filming, the quality should never be compromised, hilarious sequence it is.

Then there’s Aftaab, who the moment he comes to know that Sunny is into cinema, he tries to interact with him and they share a long conversation about films, how cinema connects two people irrespective of the countries they belong to.

Love the scene where Sunny badly wants to see Maine Pyar Kiya requesting the terrorist leader Mahmood (Kumud Mishra) to let him come outside and watch along with villages, who ignores him as a result Sunny starts mouthing all the dialogues inside his room.  And then the problem in sound of pirated cd resulting in Sunny giving voice over the Salman’s dialogues.

The final 20-25 mins was the weak link of movie, as the film heads towards a similar cliched political climax, there was a scope of innovative writing there. Also, except for Udaari (only to some extent), the songs are not worth remembering when you leave the theatre.

Performances wise, Sharib Hashmi is exceptional in his comic timing, its a role tailor-made for him. After doing good work as supporting role in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, its a good follow up for him to play a lead and get noticed much more. There are few emotional scenes in movie where he doesn’t falter either, which makes me interested to see how he would do in future films where he doesn’t play a comic character.

Inaamul Haq also was fantastic in playing the Pakistani character who loves Indian movies. He played more of a cinema lover who isn’t over the top or way too filmi in his interactions. Loved the bonding he had with Sharib in the movie. No wonder the final clippings we see is a recap of that.

Its hard to identify Kumud Mishra in the get up (Khatana of Rockstar), not a likable character by any imagination, and what I liked was the ‘no change of heart’ at all as the story develops which usually happens in our movies.

Overall, Filmistaan is worth a watch for the two great performances, excellent humor in 1st half and the bonding of two cinema lovers from India and Pakistan. If it didn’t falter in the climax, it would had been a terrific movie.

Movie Analysis : Holiday

Directed by : A.R. Murugadoss
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2556308/

Read at ur own risk, spoilers ahead…

Murugadoss last movie which was his 1st in hindi industry, was Ghajini in 2008, a gem that I enjoy watching till date. With Holiday, he slightly falters on the romantic plot which was his strength in Ghajini, but the action and thrill is upto the standard he had set then.

Captain Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar), an army man returns to Mumbai for a holiday with his family. His dad is eager to get him married to Sahiba (Sonakshi Sinha), and then starts a yes/no game between Virat and Sahiba before both eventually falling in love. In a casual pocket-cut inside bus, Virat and his friend in police Mukund (Sumeet Raghavan) catch a terrorist who accidentally blasts the bus and many innocent people including kids get killed. Virat now has to find out what that terrorist was upto, who is the head and how many more blasts were planned.

When Akshay does intense scenes that includes action, he has always looked terrific. And the action I am talking here is fast, and not the usual Hindi slow motion action. Kudos to the hollywood action director Greg Powell. There are two great long sequences in the movie, one where Virat has to stop 12 blasts from happening in Mumbai, and its a skillfully directed and edited scene. And the other when Virat has to avoid his sister and girls of other military officers from getting killed. While the former is more about mind execution, the latter is the raw action of Virat (and how much I love Akshay doing that).

Also, mention to the finale where Virat finally fights one to one with the head of sleeper cells, Farhad (Freddy Daruwala), a worthy scene slightly spoiled by the character who challenges Farhad and later says kill both. Love the dialogue at the end of scene ‘tu suspense mein hi marr’.

Songs are forcefully used in the movie, I would had taken both Shayraana and that pub song out of the movie, and also used Ashq na ho as end credits song just to lower the effect of song which I found very manipulative. Music wise, no chartbuster song.

What lets this movie down unfortunately is the love angle of Virat and Sahiba, which ends up as a break away from main proceedings of the plot and not having any effect. Had the writer interlinked Farhad revenge with Sahiba in some kinda of way, it would had been much better instead of plain disco or imaginary romantic scenes they have.  There are some funny moments with Virat and Sahiba no doubt, but they are at the expense of losing track of main plot. Even Govinda is badly used for a 2 scene cameo.

Sumeet Raghavan does very good work as supporting character. While Freddy Daruwala has good screen presence, but can’t say the same about his acting.. I read someone’s review saying Vidyut Jamwal would had been ideal choice to play the role, and I would agree with it. But, I love the intermission scene where he talks for the first time and the reply he gets from Akshay Kumar.

Among the leads, Akshay is terrific, should do more movies like these where intense acting overtakes the comedy and romance.  Sonakshi is good but then its a repetitive character which I am tired of watching her do, and her line of next movies says nothing will change, so I can’t praise her much for the moment until she has a change of brain.

Holiday may not be as good as Ghajini was, but the director does show that he can make good commercial entertainer movies which are much smarter and has meaningful action scenes with few cinematic liberties taken very well. Hope in future he doesn’t include romantic plot as a mere addition to the film.

Movie Analysis : Edge of Tomorrow

Directed by : Doug Liman
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1631867/

Read at ur own risk, spoilers ahead...

Major Wiliam Cage (Tom Cruise) who hasn’t been in a combat is suddenly forced to fight an alien race that looks more of a suicide mission for him. As a result he dies, but before dying the mimic’s blood enters inside his body causing a time loop that makes Cage reset day again and again thereby making him fight the same combat battle numerous times. The only person who understand what Cage is going through is Rita (Emily Blunt) who is a famous Special Forces warrior and had the same power Cage has now during Verdun war. Now she has to help Cage, and win this battle against aliens by training him.

The movie was like a tough video game for me. There are different levels, you die just when you are near to complete 1st one, you play again and go little far before failing again. Then you change the way you play, and come closer to completion. Finally after numerous attempts, you reach next level only to find new twists making you play earlier level differently again. Thats how this movie goes, and a reason why its enjoyable to watch Cage work hard every time he dies to succeed in the battle at beach, plus he has unlimited lives to try it again and again until Omega (the thing that needs to be destroyed to win over alien like mimics) finds him.

There are plenty of twists and turns during every attempt of Cage after dying. His first try is more of a eye-witness to observe everything, not because he knows at that time that he will be present here again later but because he isn’t battle trained to fight.

The odd occasions when he dies in weirdest ways, like the roll over on van just to get other side of camp and meet Rita, was one of funniest scene. Or when Cage tries to tell Master Sergeant Farell (Bill Paxton) that he has lived this day before and knows what will happen next, and Sergeant ignores him only to continue preaching his regular speech to him. Bill Paxton gives a very humorous touch in the way he delivers those dialogues and not believe in Cage. Quite similar to the scenes between Cage and General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), where General at first forcefully sends Cage to battlefield, and then later on is way too stubborn to help Cage and Rita.

Its not just the repeat of scenes that are enjoyable, where we see Cage struggle to reach one step further in the battle. But also, how he changes the way he plays the day again, like ignoring his fellow j squad in battle, and then even ignoring Rita to reach further. Another funniest scene comes when Cage and Rita succeed in getting important material that would let Cage find where Omega  is, Rita asks Cage ‘Now what next ?’ and Cage replies ‘I don’t know, we never reached this far’.

The level of unpredictability is so high in the film, that in the finale we see Cage and Rita fight alpha and mimics in Paris where Omega is, and this time they have only one chance as Cage hasn’t lived this day before.

Its the great plot and how wonderfully its edited that makes the movie so enjoyable, even with the number of same scene repetition you don’t get the bored feeling, thanx to either the turn of events or the angle with which the scene is shown.

The only thing that I disliked was the alphas and mimics looks, they had a very unlikable look and thereby not really pleasing to see.

The ending is different, its hard to say if Omega gets fully destroyed or not with those blood going inside Cage’s body before he wakes up.

Tom Cruise is in wonderful form, and its only final 30 mins where we see the routine of him, as the earlier part is the person who is not well equipped to handle tough situations. And he shines playing both very well. Emily Blunt also has a very good role and not limited to just being a part of Tom Cruise movie, infact she is the scene stealer at many places, specially when she is training Cage. Also, the romantic emotional bond the director is able to build between them in this action movie is commendable, as it comes out nicely.

Edge of Tomorrow is a enjoyable sci-fi action movie, with plenty of twists and turns, it keeps you guessing and good performances from the lead makes it a very good watch.

Missed Reviews - Hollywood : Jan-May

Few lines on all the Hollywood movies I have seen this year and not written full review on them…

American Hustle :

Average plot, but the insane behavior of the characters makes this a very interesting watch. When you see actors like Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jenniffer Lawrence doing unusual things, you can’t stop but admiring it. The first scene itself sets it up, it tells how much mad characters would be as Bale is seen cutting his hairs on head and sticking with gum to form a better hairstyle, and also tells the pace of movie would be on the slower side. There is Jenniffer as wife of Bale, who cracks up in every scene she gets, and that dance she does in final moments of movie. Bradley’s temptation to resist not making out with Amy, and the con games both Amy and Bale play. Jeremy Renner plays the only supporting character who behaves much normal, and probably a reason why you feel bad for him and his friendship with Bale that falls. I can see this movie again and again for all this ensemble cast, and if you are into insane (not as much Pulp Fiction), then you may not regret watching this movie either.
Verdict : 4/5

12 Years a Slave :

Very tough movie to watch, for all the torture the characters go through specially Solomon (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor). I felt there should had been more scenes of Solomon with the 2nd master he served for, probably because he was the nicest of all three. Also, the torture given to the woman by the 3rd master was the hardest to watch, almost made me regret watching movie, plus it shifted the focus slightly away from Solomon which I didnt like. The final scene when Solomon returns back, was quite a emotional one, also all the moments where he was close to giving up but he didn’t, the scene where he tells another slave that this he doesn’t want to survive, he wants to live. Clearly, the director wants the audience to feel the torture this free black man and many others go through after being kidnapped and becoming slaves. He hardly gives you scenes to have  breather, the torture gets gruesome scene by scene. Could had shown flashbacks of his old life bit more, when he was happy with his family, also the search going on by them to find him, just to add drama and give slight relief from torture sequences. Its still a good one time watch for Solomon’s performance and the direction of Steve McQueen
Verdict : 3/5

Her :

Theodore (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely man, in final stages of his divorce and not quite able to come out of it. He buys a new artificial intelligent operating system which has a female voice by Scarlett Johansson. When was the last time that you don’t see a character in entire movie, only her voice and yet how much you adore and love her. Samantha is funny, sexy, teasing, seduces and despite being a operating system gives hope and company to Theodore, who eventually falls in love. What’s great is the concept of Samantha isn’t limited to just being a operating system becoming aid for Theodre to see his mistakes regarding ex-wife or view life in different manner, but Samantha herself explores various traits of humans that develops her emotions and feelings. She is more or less a human who isn’t visible. The end is kinda of heart-breaking but it serves purpose of knowing how to love. Special mention to that funny game sequence once with Theodore, and then later when his friend is working on one. Great performance by Joaquin Phoenix, and the writing of movie is pretty strong with some very romantic moments.
Verdict : 4.5/5

The Monuments Men :

Easily my biggest disappointment of the year so far after ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. The pace was so fucking slow, and it didn’t appear like they wanted to come to the point. Even actors like George Clooney and Matt Damon get hardly 1-2 scenes to shine. The story of a group of soldiers tasked to find and preserve the art stolen and hidden by the Nazis during World War II was pretty interesting and I thought it would make for a interesting watch. But a very weak script and screenplay going nowhere makes you leave the theatre with a sad face, you hardly take back anything from this film. Easily a film you can skip watching.
Verdict : 1.5/5

Noah :

What I really liked in the film was the special effects and the cinematography for some awesome visuals. And thats it, the movie was a total bore for me with Russell Crowe specially getting on my nerves, seems he’s not doing great roles at all, last time he irritated me in Man of the Steel too. Only reason why I went to see film was Ema Watson, and she didn’t disappoint me.
Verdict : 1/5

Captain America : The Winter Soldier :

After Thor, he’s the next avenger that I find very boring. Not seen previous parts, yet the trailer had me interested and the film exceeded all the expectations. Whats great is that they make Nick Fury (played by Sameul Jackson) so vulnerable, and then Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) isn’t sure what makes him happy with his ongoing issues with Nick and Shield, and there’s a new enemy he is about to witness, Bucky (Sebastian Stan) who is fast and more powerful than him, and his old best friend. All this makes for a compelling drama, with Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) providing lots of laugh out moments. The action is not typical superhero types, instead we see how tough Steve finds to get better of Bucky or even the 1st action scene. Also, excellent performance by Robert Redford. Easily a movie that entertains to the core, and even its end credits scenes don’t disappoint either.
Verdict : 4/5

The Amazing Spiderman 2 :

I am happy that I saw all 3 parts of  Tobey Maguire version of Spiderman  before watching this one. Still Andrew Garfield would be the actor I would prefer playing Spiderman but in those older versions where story dominated even if the effects were not as good as these new movies have. Problem with Amazing Spiderman 2 is that it tries to be way quick, there’s lot of witty dialogues, then there’s Electro (played by Jamie Foxx) who doest get one great scene, and then other villain Harry (played by Dane DeHaan)whose plot is totally spoiled and his actions appear so out of context. The only place this film goes right is the love track of Peter (played by Andrew Garfield) and Gwen (played by Emma Stone), and even in it they had to make Gwen die which was unexpected but then its my heart which has a crush on her saying this, from film’s point its acceptable. Dane DeHaan has one lovely scene where he enters his office with Electro and has that evil look on his face, and somehow there he resembled a lot with the younger Leonardo di caprio. Another good scene I can recall is the final speech of Gwen that Peter listens to during pre-climax scene. The film looked like an attempt to get as many villains as they can to make Spiderman fight, but they needed to give a solid story also with it to make it look convincing. Even the link to his father secret looked silly and useless. I would prefer the 1st part over this one, that was slow but at least it had a proper story to it.
Verdict : 2/5

Million Dollar Arm :

A sports agent JB (played by John Hamm) decides to find indian cricket players whom he could train as pro baseball players in US. His discoveries are Rinku (played by Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh (played by Madhur Mittal), and he brings Amit (played by Pitobash) also with them who would help them with english/hindi translation. Upto this point the movie is good and enjoyable, once they reach US, the movie slips into regular drama and a very predictable climax. Even Rahman’s music doesn’t give any special feel to the movie. Plus, I don’t understand why montage of India has to have classical music and lots of poor india images in it, can’t we get out of this stereotype. Performances wise I liked Pitobash a lot, specially that small motivation speech he gives at the end. Also, the funny style of pitching by Suraj Sharma and that guy who would assist JB during India tour and sleep all the time. Decent one time watch movie.
Verdict : 2.5/5

Godzilla :

How badly I was waiting for this movie, and had this movie been bad, it would had hurt a hell lot. It was simply outstanding movie, when the opening credits start with that background score I knew this is gonna be epic. If you are looking for Godzilla to be shown after every fucking 5-10 mins, then I guess this ain’t a movie for you. But if you are fine with Godzilla shown properly just 3-4 times in whole movie, then you would enjoy this ride a lot like me. Infact I felt the decision to not show Godzilla fight the Muto’s initially to audience was a great idea too, that actually made the final fight scene totally worth it. And boy, that roar of Godzilla gave me goosebumps. Only weak link in the movie was the lack of emotional connect with Ford (played by Aaron Taylor Johnson) and Elle (Elizabeth Olsen). The director covered Ford’s father and mother back story very well, or be the father-son relation too was handled well. Other thing that bothered me was the way tsunami scene is handled, the people running looked way too fake, never appeared like they are in fear of death with the speed with which they ran. Like the way Dr Ishiro (played by Ken Watanabe) announces the arrival of Godzilla, his keenness to be present to see the 1st sight of him, and then his comparison of Nature to Humans. And special mention to the background score, major highlight of the movie that made it look that good. Love the nervousness during that train sequence, and my fav scene is of course the build up to Godzilla’s 1st appearance with lots of parallel cuts. Can’t wait to buy its DVD and hear Godzilla roaring loud on my computer. Phew.
Verdict : 4.5/5

X-Men : Days of Future Past :

First film in this series that I have seen, and I didn’t really felt hooked to it. Also, some connectivity to past films didn’t help, but mainly it was the concept that didn’t interest me much. That QuickSilver (played by Evan Peters) slow motion scene with the background song was my best moment from the movie. Jenniffer Lawrence also failed to make any mark. Hugh Jackman (as Logan) was great and witty, as long as he didn’t let Wolverine enter. James McAvoy (as Charles) was good in supporting role, liked the scene where Logan asks him to enter his mind and give him hope. I doubt watching old films would make any difference to my liking either.
Verdict : 2/5

Blended :

Decent time pass movie, with some good laughs. The final few moments of the movie gets too dramatic to my liking, and there are places where the gags don’t work. Liked Drew Barrymore most, and that cutest little girl of Jim (played by Adam Sandler). Story wise, nothing new or special. Special mention to those band of guys leader who pops up everywhere to sing ‘Blended’ and stuff, too hilarious he was.
Verdict : 2.5/5

Missed Reviews - Hindi Movies : Jan-May

Hardly written any reviews this year, so here’s few lines on all the hindi films I have seen this year …

Dedh Ishqiya :

Naseeruddin and Arshad make this one hell of hilarious movie, special mention to batman dialogue scene and where they stay all night with guns in hand. Its only woman's who don't excel to the extent Vidya did in 1st part, the dance angle of Madhuri is specially forced into narrative making the madness of movie go down. The finale is excellent, and not to forget Mustaq's evil laugh that I so loved. The film is very good in comparison to last part, but it could had been much better.
Verdict : 3.5/5

Miss Lovely :

It was completely realistic film (or so felt while watching), Anil George shines in a gray role while Nawazuddin never disappoints, the final scene specially one of his best in film. Yet, there are 2 reasons why the film fails for me, one is lack of drama, its like documentary for lot of time with the story going too straightforward with only twist coming in form of Niharika's character, with the editing being so terrible that at places there's nothing happening in frame yet its stretched. But, main reason for me not liking the movie was that I just couldn't enjoy watching sleazy sequences (terribly masked guy having sex and many more). While coming out of theatre, I felt that I would had been better off staying away from knowing about C grade hindi film industry. Special mention to opening sequence, its like a tribute to ramsey brothers horror movies.
Verdict : 1.5/5

Hasee Toh Phasee :

Unlike other rom-com, this one is different which I was expecting with Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Karan Johar together producing it. Parineeti is excellent specially in scenes where she acts insane. Siddharth proved he ain't one film wonder, with a good follow up performance though I am keenly waiting to see him Ek Villian which will be totally different genre for him. There's a good dose of humor in the movie even if there are moments of melodrama including kuch kuch hota hai tribute in pre-climax.  The scene where Siddharth tries to make his father in law come out in terrace is hilarious and also the Daya (C.I.D) spoof.  Nice to see Adah Sharma get good role in a well known banner movie, and she didnt disappoint plus she looked gorgeous during Shake it like Shammi (one of my favs) song. Only problem was the back story of Parineeti which didn't look much convincing on which the entire behavior of Parineeti was based, and why would she try to run away again without informing her dad when everything is back to normal. Still, a very light hearted and enjoyable movie.
Verdict : 3/5

Gunday :

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor bonding was best thing about this movie. With Irffan Khan, you expect some great scenes, and he does get them without disappointing. But the story and screenplay is pretty weak, and then the cliche moment in later part of 2nd half when Priyanka has to choose between love and duty, tired of these situations. The climax doesn’t offer anything new either. Songs are average too, with only tune maari entriyaan and Saiyyan worth listening. Also, how badly Pankaj Tripathi is wasted in the movie. Had they not played with Priyanka’s character in routine manner and written it in different way, plus utilized the hot tempered Arjun Kapoor character more then it would had been better for the movie. Turns out to be okish one time watch.
Verdict : 2/5

Highway :

One of rare Imtiaz Ali movies, that I liked but didn’t love. I loved way he handles Alia Bhatt’s and Randeep Hooda’s characters, their childhood trauma and when they share it with each other and become like father-mother to each other. My problem with film lied with a key scene, when Alia runs away after being kidnapped, returns back and suddenly she has found the dangerous environment cool and friendly and enjoyable. The transition was not at all convincing and its the scene after which the main movie begins so it affected my viewing a lot. The visuals and journey was applaudable, its like a never ending journey and like Alia you feel it should not end. The long monologue sequence alone tells how good an actor Alia Bhatt is whom I personally disliked in SOTY. Randeep Hooda excels in a better role after doing stupid ones in past many films. Also, Durgesh Kumar is lovable as Aadoo in his supporting role. Rahman’s music as always gels well with movie, Patakha Guddi especially is special even though I like male version more. Special mention to how Imtiaz uses small screen while showing the happy go atmosphere of marriage or people living a fake life to the real word. Reminded me of GOW where kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi was cut to violent gun scene (different execution though from Imtiaz). I haven’t given up on Highway yet, who knows audio commentary may make me love it. And if it doesn’t happen, Highway is still a well made movie that I can see again and again.
Verdict : 3/5

Shaadi Ke Side Effects :

It was first big disappointment of the year, a movie I had lots of expectations from.  There are some scenes that are funny like the one where Farhan tells hotel owner how differently he handles the situation of taking wife for dinner/party, or when Farhan wants to feel pain of carrying child by using pillows. The problem with film is that its predecessor Pyar ke side effects was full of laughs and a total entertainer it was, while SKSE turns out to be more dramatic specially in 2nd half while the climax is way too much stretched. After a certain while, the film doesn’t even engage you enough to manage till the end. Vidya Balan once again didn’t impress like she does, Farhan Akhtar does well but in comparison to his all movies till now this would be his weakest film. Even Vir Das couldn’t save the unconvincing 2nd half. Among songs, only Harry is not brahmchari appeals, rest are strictly average.
Verdict : 2/5

Gulaab Gang :

Juhi Chawla in a negative role, was what made me interested in this movie and she was indeed very good in her attempt. But, the movie was very average, thanx to sloppy writing and songs inserted at wrong situations. Madhuri Dixit couldn’t do a Lajja kind performance this time around. That actress who dies of poison was other highlight of movie, in a supporting role she was very impressive.
Verdict : 2/5

Queen :

The best movie of this year till now, Vikas Bahl’s dialogues, Anvitta Dutta’s dialogues and Abhijit-Anurag’s editing made it look so outstanding. Its one of those feel good movies that you want to see again and again. Kangana gives her best performance of career, outdoing Gangster and Fashion. How well she plays a innocent Delhi girl who goes to her honeymoon abroad alone, her initial struggle and then how she finds herself enjoying with new friends she makes. Her comic timing is fantastic, love the scene where she is totally drunk and is narrating her school/college life to people present there who wouldn’t understand a word she spoke in hindi, and then her misinterpretation of word ‘ash’ as ‘aish’. Lisa Haydon is surprise package of film, in her small supporting cameo. While Rajkumar Rao plays a character that you hate, and he does well in that. Very good performances by all the characters whom Queen meets in Amsterdam, did remind me of the bonding Sridevi had in English Vinglish though both are entirely different in situations. Great end credits too, specially that ‘Kutta’ photo. Amit Trivedi’s excellent music another highlight of movie, loved his version of 'Hungama ho gaya'.  Queen most likely would remain in my top5 when the year ends, and possibly no.1 too. There’s just nothing to dislike about this movie at all. After a long time, Rockstar was last I think, its a 5 out of 5 movie for me.
Verdict : 5/5

Total Siyappa :

Kirron Kher has got amazing comic timing, first 20 minutes are fun to watch when Ali and Yami reach house. After that, the movie goes totally haywire, two useless subplots of Anupam Kher and the brother’s anger towards neighbor’s DJ playing loud. Director could had utilized more story on Kiron Kher and her thoughts on Ali Zafar and Pakistan, plus added more drama into Ali-Yami plot. Yami’s sister’s husband was funny to watch in 1-2 scenes he had for how miser he was. The climax is like quickly sorting all conflicts to give a happy ending. Just few laughs the film offers, else waste of time.
Verdict : 1.5/5

Bewakoofiyaan :

Rishi Kapoor has made a habit of choosing roles that have so much scope for him, not the routine dad roles. And he does them so brilliantly, almost overshadows the main lead actors. Ayushmann Khurana though does make a mark this time after bad 2nd film. Sonam Kapoor as always continues to show that she can’t act. Story on recession hits note in parts, plus to see a spoilt rich girl get back her love kinda of looked weird to me. The movie is more of how two rich people in relationship behave, and what happens when one loses job and fails to get new one, getting dependent on the other. The movie might have worked with targeted audience, I feel I aint one of that. Some songs are nice, specially that conversational song between Ayushmann and Neeti Mohan (voice for Sonam).
Verdict : 2.5/5

Ankhon Dekhi :

Nicely made movie, liked the concept of a late 50 guy deciding to believe in things which he sees and nothing else that eventually makes people look at him like a mad man or a saint or a fool. Sanjay Mishra is one of under-used and brilliant actor, and this film is a prime example of it. The way he handles the love affair of his daughter, or the conflict he has with his brother played by Rajat Kapoor, or all the followers who first mock his theories and later becomes his followers. Even the regular ghar ka drama is kept to minimum. I would though have liked Sanjay Mishra’s character to have few more changes in his life before he eventually goes for a vacation with wife. The final scene was awesome too. Seema Pahwa and Manu Rishi shines in the supporting roles.
Verdict : 3.5/5

Ragini MMS 2 :

The only good thing about this movie was the Baby Doll song. There are numerous laugh out scenes, Sunny leone’s approach to research reffered as 'Porno se rituporno kab ban gayi’ by her director whose name is Rocks (yea). The director Rocks is over the top and so is the film. Sandhya Mridul, film’s only hope talks in some wierdo lingo and as a result she irritates too. Sunny’s sex image is utilized with lots of imaginative dreamy scenes and enough hot scenes before the chudail takes over. Divya Dutta does act nicely, though one wonders about her character, why chooses such dangerous cases and why in such late night alone goes to help Sunny who is possessed. Another funny scene is when Sunny goes to meet Ragini in mental asylum, knowing Ragini is possessed she goes to meet her as if Ragini is a normal person who would help Sunny in her character understanding. In terms of scare, the film has nothing to offer, in terms of sex scenes there are few that may interest you including a girl to girl kiss. Sunny leone again falters in her acting, only one scene to talk off for her which is on porn related. I never liked Ragini MMS, but having watched Ragini MMS2 now I feel how much better the last one was.
Verdict : 0.5/5

Dishkiyaoon :

Harman Baweja has never been a non-actor for me, but he chooses wrong movies and then rightly gets criticized. This film is another example of how badly directed and written it is, with some weird dialogues and scenes. A guy forgives his best friend for making love with his gf, and at climax he takes revenge with dialogue ‘kuch bhi karo par apne dost ki gf ke saath’ .. Some directors don’t understand meaning of thriller at all, another instance is Harman narrating his complete story to Sunny Deol in jail, and its clear to us that Sunny has some intention in all that. His haryanvi accent is good though. Also, can’t understand why Harman Bawaja’s gf who initially knows he is a gangster later wants him to leave this world, why fall in love then. Too many cliches, then a sad song, a re-union of lovers and a predictable climax. Tu hi hai aashiqui is only decent song in the movie. Prashant Narayanan manages to impress in this not so worthy movie with his small role.
Verdict : 1/5

Youngistaan :

The story is hard to believe, a regular not so interested in politics late 20’s going to clubs and living with his gf guy suddenly is told to be next P.M of India. How he would handle the pressure of such a big job along with his girlfriend who is very possessive and wants him to be with her as much as he was before all this. The director does it very well for first few portion of film, before getting too much monotonous. Plus, he offers just too little hurdles into Jackky Bhagnani’s way, as if saying he would handle everything with utmost ease.  The likes of Prakash Belawadi could had been utilized but isn’t. Jackky’s performance is pretty good, and Neha compliments him well too. But its the loose screenplay and lack of good drama that lets the film down. Most of the songs are good, specially Arijit’s sangemarmar picturised at Taj. Farooque Sheikh delivers very good supporting role performance which I believe is his last in main commercial movie.
Verdict : 2/5

Main Tera Hero :

It totally irritates me when the first sequence of the movie is so over the top, I feel deviated from the film then. But, here the movie that follows after that did give me enough good laughing moments. Mostly its for Varun Dhawan’s comic timing, a film that looks like being made just for him to utilize him in dance (totally like Govinda-Dhawan style), flirt with 2 girls, and make fool of many people that he meets like Saurabh Shukla and Arunoday Singh. Arunoday has a funny signature line ‘knock knock.. who’s there’. Both heroines, Ileana and Nargis have nothing much to offer.  Special mention to Anupam Kher’s character whose voice echoes a lot because he was born in Himalayas. At many places, as expected the story won’t make much sense, some gags fall flat too. But still great songs like Palat, gandi baat, Besharmi, and Varun’s performance makes this a watchable comedy movie and there are shades of old David Dhawan in this one, lets hope the complete laugh riot films that David Dhawan used to make return as quickly as possible.
Verdict : 2.5/5

Bhoothnath Returns :

Film begins with a world of Bhoot interacting with each other as Bhoothnath enters a place where Bhoot are given new life in form of humans or anything else they wanna become in next life as per their choice. Bhoothnath has become a joke in bhoot world, thereby he returns back to earth to scare kids and show his worth but he fails again and a kid Akhrot played by Parth could see him like Banku could in last part. First 30 mins of movie are enjoyable for the great chemistry Parth shares with Amitabh. One manipulative song after which Bhoothnath decides to stand in elections, was tiresome to watch and shouldn’t had been used. The election rivalry between Boman and Amitabh is well handled, but it doesn’t quite has the charm that earlier portion of movie gives you. The final scene between talented Sanjay Mishra and Amitabh is awesome, where the former shows us current India and the latter shows us a new india. Despite the flaws, its a pretty decent movie, and it also gives a message for everyone to vote.
Verdict : 2.5/5

2 States :

Having read the novel by Chetan Bhagat, I was not sure if Arjun and Alia could do justice to the characters of Krish and Ananya, but I was wrong, as they did splendidly well. My only complaint was why Ronit Roy (playing father of Krish) role was so short. I don’t remember how long his role was in novel, but I think it was certainly as small as in the film. Arjun and Alia share very good chemistry, and liked how the director uses 1 song to celebrate all festivals and quickly take story to graduation day.  He doesn’t fail to establish love between Krish and Ananya which was necessary for later portions of movie. And the meeting of Krish and Ananya parents (one of my fav scene) gives that feeling that how tough they both will find to convince their parents. Krish communicating with Ananya’s father played very well by Shiv Subramaniyam was very funny, be his nervousness or his way to describe Ananya’s home or her fathers reaction when he looks for Ananya. Revathi does well too as Ananya’s mother. Though the scene stealer is Krish’s mother played by Amrita Singh, who plays a typical Punjabi Mom so efficiently. Ronit Roy as Krish’s father plays a loose version of Udaan, strict but soft by heart. The scene where he gets slapped by his own son, was tough to watch (and not at all worth laughing which most people did). I love the background theme that was used at every Krish and his father scenes, one of my very favs. Songs were good to hear with film, but no special song as such, though Chaandaniya was quite nice. One thing I didn’t understand what was the role of psychiatrist and where does she disappear in the final scene.. quite a mystery. The scene where Krish sees the good side of his father was emotional one, and so was the dialogue ‘uss din unhe gale lagaana chah raha tha, par yeh thoda jyada ho jaata na, agar sab kuch ekdum se theek ho jaaye toh life boring ho jaati hai’. Both Arjun and Alia gave great performances, it was 2nd good work in row from Alia. Though, I liked Arjun more, who had a tougher role. Alia looked very hot, be it in the college scenes, or the saree sequences later. For me, this is 2nd best movie adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel after Kai Po Che.
Verdict : 4/5

Revolver Rani :

After Queen, expected a lot from Kangana, but its a film I felt she shouldn’t have done. Its not a badly made film, but a film which has nothing to like about. What I loved was those sidekicks of Uday Bhaan Singh (Zakir Hussain) who are all the time fighting like kids as they wanna kill Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut). Vir Das once again disappoints, while Piyush Mishra plays a character you have seen him do before numerous times.  Only other scene that I loved was when Vir Das has to get married twice and then change his religion too, and all had one particular song playing in background, that was hilarious. The action genre lovers may enjoy this movie, but for me it doesn’t work at all.
Verdict : 1/5

Kaanchi :

A very under developed story of Kaanchi (Mishti) and Binda (Kartik Aaryan), which didn’t help the movie at all. The film focusses a lot on Kaanchi, and her revenge for the death of Binda. How she struggles, and through the help of her childhood friend Bagula (Chandan Roy Sanyal), who is a police inspector now, she tries to  destroy everyone who were connected to Binda’s death. Subhash Ghai looked like coming back to form with Yuvvraaj (I pretty much felt so, which many others don’t), but with Kaanchi he takes a step back again, and I wonder if he won’t be able to give a gem in future at all. There’s another frustrating moment in film when his old movie songs are made fun of in a song titled Kambhal ke neeche, that features a over-weight Mahima Chaudhary. Mishti’s acting can’t be told by this film, she more or less screams in major portions of movie or has that anger look on her face, will give her one more chance before making a opinion. Rishi Kapoor for a change does a role he shouldn’t had accepted. Mithun is good in what you can call negative shade as a political leader. Adil Hussain is pretty much wasted. While Chandan gets very less scope too.
Verdict : 1/5

Samrat & Co :

I have seen Sherlock Holmes PartII, but not the 1st one yet, so if they copied scenes from it then I can’t tell. But its clear that Robert Downey Jr’s fast speaking dialogues is taken up by Rajeev Khandelwal (playing Samrat), which I must say didn’t look that good on him as it didn’t look like coming natural at all. What was more disappointing was the story, a typical bhoot background and then a murder, and start of detective to look out for clues. Thanks to trailer, I knew well before, who one of main killer would be, of course a twist was always possible. Now, two of most funny scenes in movie, right throughout movie Samrat is shown as very smart and quick, in one situation the killer tells him to not make a mistake with A B C (don’t remember exact dialogue), and Samrat had just given his car to Dimpy (played by Madalsa Sharma) who’s car isn’t working. So, Samrat takes a minute to quickly think what A B C means, something we as viewer can make out the moment the killer tells Samrat about it, how ironic. Then, there’s a scene between Samrat and one of the killer in pre-climax, where they are both fighting hand to hand and having a conversation, bolo kaise kiya, and the killer tells in return, how funny. Also, some of very unusual dialogues could be heard in movie that I don’t remember now. Good thing was, they didn’t waste time on romantic plot of Samrat and Dimpy, which looked like happening when that guitar scene between them comes.  But sadly, they gave very less time on script too. Only worthy thing about movie was the background theme, which also after a certain while gets boring to hear.
Verdict : 1.5/5

Kya Dilli Kya Lahore :

A war-com movie released not too long back, this one has funny moments too but it stays mainly serious at portraying Ind-Pak differences on border. To add drama, Vijay Raaz plays a Pakistani who was originally from Delhi before Partition, while Manu Rishi plays a Indian who was from Lahore (or Karachi, don’t remember) before partition. The hide and seek played by both is enjoyable initially, but after a while it becomes tiresome. Almost 70% of movie is done between these two characters and their conversations. Raj Zutshi provides some relief in latter part of 2nd half with slight twist to proceedings, but its well and truly too late. Performances from both great actors are worthy to watch, but too slow a movie in terms of narration makes it very dull watch.
Verdict : 1.5/5

Hawaa Hawaai :

There are many films which show how your dreams may get fulfilled or devastated, depending on the path you follow and the effort you put in. Hawaa Hawaai is such story of a kid who works as chai delivery boy outside a big building whose area at night changes into a skating practice arena, and there is when Partho Gupte (playing Arjun) dreams of becoming a champion in skating, a sport he hadn’t even played before but he gets attracted to it as if love at first sight. Partho as well as all other kids playing his friends are the limelight of this movie, they are full of energy, in one sequence they all go to a sports shop to buy skates thinking it costs just 30, one of hilarious scenes, or one before it when the girl says 30k and he says 30 na ? What I felt wasn’t required in the movie, was the Saqib Saleem’s continuous comparison to Eklavya and all, also the forced into romantic plot of Saqib which was small yet not required at all. And then the parallel cut climax where drama is brought in with Partho thinking of the day his dad died, I know its important that the main person of race should lag behind in final race and then win it from there, but I would have preferred some other drama instead of recap of his dad’s death. Unlike Stanley Ka Dabba, felt the message conveyed here about child labour was slightly put onto us instead of letting the story say it. Still a movie to enjoy for the performances by all the 5 kids.
Verdict : 2.5/5

The Xpose :

If you aren’t a diehard Himesh fan (like me), then the only reason to watch this film would be either you watch all films or you wanna see how bad the film is, the latter is the reason why I saw this and the film didn’t disappoint, easily worst of the year. Himesh shines, yes he does but only in one scene or two, for instance when he returns to Mumbai to shoot for a hindi movie, the way he delivers the dialogue to the media was one of my rarest liked moments of the movie, and other when he tells he won’t get beaten by villains and he changes one of dialogues during a shoot scene. In major part of film, he is simply plastic and walking like blind or dead person. Just see his walking style in ‘dard dilon ke’ song, you won’t stop laughing the way he acts in that, and many such moments come in movie itself. Other flaws, well the girl who gets murdered, is shown falling down thrice (for whatever fucking reason director felt to do so). The court room drama should be labelled among funniest directed scene ever too, a case solved on 1st day of hearing and Mr Himesh Reshammiya just looks at the people sitting in the room to make them nervous and wow, the murderer gets nervous and the case solved. And the crap doesn’t end yet, the murder happens thrice, first person by mistake, second intentionally and after having fallen twice from the building.. she is still alive only to be killed by other actress who didn’t like the way she got insulted by her during the party. And Mr Himesh again was present to see all this, seems he is everywhere. I could go on and on, describing how fucking terrible the movie was, and I may enjoy too. But no further wastage of time, there’s nothing at all to like in this movie except for 1-2 scenes at best. Feel bad Irrfan Khan decided to do this film, even if it was just a cameo.  The actor Himesh destroying the singer Himesh, and the singer Himesh very long ago destroyed the composer Himesh. But he won’t learn.
Verdict : 0/5

Heropanti :

Some directors get over-obsessed with a old film tune, that flute tune of Hero is madly used in the narrative, as if they couldn’t get fresh background score at all. The story is nothing new, a strict father who doesn’t believe that his daughters are allowed to fall in love. And then comes, Tiger Shroff who falls in love with Prakash Raj’s 2nd daughter, after his 1st daughter already ran away with a friend of Tiger. There are things to like in movie, like Tiger’s action, he could give a strong fight to Vidyut Jammal, only other who is that good in such action stunts.  Also, Tiger got amazing screen presence, if only his acting improves a bit as his dialogue delivery isn’t upto the mark at all. Prakash Raj continues to play same roles again and again, same comedy expressions during anger situations. A surprise of film was Sunil Grover special appearance, and quite well done too. Heropanti was watchable, average story but execution not as bad as it looked from promos. Though, still a one time watch movie.
Verdict : 2/5

Citylights :

So many expectations with this film were gone for a toss, and its not because the film was badly directed, but it was manipulated at editing table way too much. Why was the need to use Sone do or Muskuraane songs in parts again and again, or the same tunes at moments where even silence was enough. The start to movie is great, the story isn’t new, a village guy forced to find work in Mumbai after losing all his saved money, the struggle he and his family faces. Raj Kumar Rao once again impresses in his acting, and that dialect he gets so right. Patralekha too looks into the character very well. Among other actors, its Manav Kaul who shines. Love the moment when Patralekha tells Raj Kumar what profession she has gone into, and next moment is spoiled by inserting Muskuraane song. Many such moments are spoiled like this in film, otherwise Hansal Mehta captured the misery of RajKumar and his family very well. Although, he isn’t able to use Mumbai as another character in the film, could be deliberate attempt.  Citylights is still a good watch for the performances, and if you like being forced to feel emotional, then you may love it too.
Verdict : 2.5/5

Trailer : Ek Villain

Easily the best trailer of 2014 so far, what made it special for me was the emotional layer the person who cut it added by using Shraddha’s version of Galliyan and putting clips over it. Whether it was his/her idea or Mohit or someone, whoever it was, its the only reason the trailer makes such a bigger impact.

They finally showcase character of Riteish Deshmukh, who before this was looking miscast to me but seems he might had just given a very surprising performance in negative shade. Yes, there is a slight similarity between his character and that of Prashant in Murder2, but thats a very tiny one, the reason for killing and other scenarios are different in both films. So pretty immature if you say both are same films.

Apart from Riteish, its Siddharth whom I most looking forward to watch, again his character has slight shades of Shivam from Awarapan. I am keen to see how he plays the negative part (when he is villain) and the revenge part in latter 2nd half. He would be great in romantic one as visible in all the song promos so far, sharing good chemistry with Shraddha Kapoor.  I love Shraddha’s shammi style dance in one of the clips.

Lovely use of Riteish’s dialogue over Shraddha’s alaap, also the one where he looks at himself in mirror. Wonder if he has a back story too or just plays a psycho.

Only irritating moments I found was Krk and ‘shoot me’ guys, hope their screen time would be less in movie.

Also, Milap’s dialogues for a change weren’t bad, though that stress one looked slightly awkward to me.

The story of the movie has nothing new to offer, its gonna be how the trio perform, especially Riteish and Siddharth who are doing very different roles. And how high the movie is on emotions, would determine how much I could love it if i do. Hopefully the background score and use of songs won’t be manipulative like CityLights was.

Very much looking forward for this movie after having loved trailer and almost all songs.

Known for doing different and hatke roles, Mr Perfectionist easily is one of best actors India has, an actor one is always dependable on to give quality films one after another. And he hasn't disappointed in his last 9 films, which is a big achievement.

Aamir has done 40 movies (excluding child artist movies), which in his 24-25 year career comes as such a low number for a star actor. He was the one who started the trend of doing one movie a year, believing in quality over quantity. Not many other actors successfully could copy him, as in the end it comes to choosing right scripts which Aamir has been doing ever since the debacle of 'Mangal Pandey'.

I have seen 25 movies out of 40, liked 21 of them and disliked only 'Mela'. 'Mangal Pandey' was disappointing since it took the film so many years and the result was mediocre, but Aamir's performance was still likable.

'Qayamat se Qayamat Tak' and 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar' were the starting films that I saw of him, and they were gems, so was his performance as a chocolate boy hero. The final cycle race still gives me goosebumps. Interestingly, my top5 films includes only 1 post 2000 film (quite similar to Shahrukh Khan post). It doesn't mean that he did bad films later on, but I somehow love actors in their young days more.

To have done a tough movie like 'Raakh' so early on in his career (if I am right it was his next movie after QSQT), only tells how good his choice was at a young age.  One of my most favorite movies that I am glad I got to watch some years back, better late than never.

'Ghajini' is and will always remain a special movie for me, can see it any number of times, the south action for a change doesn't irritate me.  While the cult 'Andaz Apna Apna' is among best indian comedy movies. Aamir's comic timing and chemistry with Salman Khan makes the film very enjoyable with some evergreen hilarious scenes, 'aap gyani hai, maha gyani hai, balki main toh kehta hoon ki aap purush hi nahi hai.. maha purush hai.. maha purush'.

The reason I prefer 'Akele Hum Akele Tum' over 'Sarfarosh', 'Lagaan' or 'Rang De Basanti', is the way the subject of a couple in same profession i.e singer, is handled (unlike Abhimaan, or Aashiqui 2). Specially love the Aamir and his son relation in the movie.

In cop roles, Aamir has excelled in 'Sarfarosh', his scenes with Naseeruddin Shah are treat to watch. Also, liked pairing of Aamir and Sonali Bendre. 'Talaash' was a total surprise, a psychological movie that shows horror genre like never seen before. How well Aamir portrays the mental trauma he's going through with the guilt of losing his son.

'Ghulam' was another hatke movie, where he played a character that fights against wrong despite odds against him. The final climax sequence and the train bet sequence were my favs. 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Rang De Basanti' classifies among best films made on friendship. The reason why I like DCH more is the slowness the movie has, which makes it much more likable. RDB on other hand has added social message attached to it.

'Lagaan' that released with Gadar, took time before I saw it as I had loved Gadar a lot then, but when I saw Lagaan after a while, I totally loved it being a cricket lover. The final match sequence specially was very entertaining.

Whenever Aamir has tried his hands at masala movies, he has been brilliant though its a genre that he does once in a while which I personally feel is right.  'Dil', 'Ishq', 'Raja Hindustani', ‘Fanaa’, ‘Dhoom3' and just recently released ‘PK' are some of his good works in the genre, with ‘Fanaa', 'Dhoom 3’ and ‘PK’ (mainly 1st half) being my favs. The shayari andaaz in 1st half to a total opposite matured lover in 2nd, made his character to love as well hate in 'Fanaa'. While you gotta belong to anti-dhoom franchise to hate 'Dhoom 3', how well he played the double role, a character that robs banks stylishly but with a motive of taking revenge. ‘PK’ first half was so funny that I had tears coming out of my eyes laughing so much, and I don’t remember when it happened last time with me, loved Aamir’s funny religious and fashion related incidents and then the anger he displays against God.  And I still can’t believe that I didn’t hate a movie that was full of Bhojpuri dialogues spoken by Aamir.

Out of the unseen movies, 'Rangeela', 'Earth' and 'Mann' are the films I would love to watch sooner, specially 'Rangeela' whose VCD I have got with me but never got the mood to watch.

Aamir has appealed to me mainly as an actor only, there was a incident where he made a nasty comment on Shahrukh related to his dog which was in bad taste, also the war of words when both actors films use to release during same time. Those were some of not so good moments, but in last few years haven't seen Aamir making bad remarks which is nice for a actor of his calibre.

Also, his show Satyamev Jayante which many people like even those who don't like him, but I have never been attracted by these social message spreading shows, so not seen a single episode till date and probably won't in future.

His only directorial movie Taare Zameen Par, was good one and I did like it but not as much as I saw all others appreciating it, maybe because it was tough to connect to it for me.

I would love to see him try more offbeat films like 'Dhobi Ghat', though it was just a supporting role, he was superb in it. Another interesting thing is that he gets paired against new actresses or directors a lot like Katrina in Dhoom3 and recently Anushka in PK. His next ‘Dangal’ will show him playing a wrestler inspired from Mahavir Phogat, and he would be seen talking in Haryanvi.

Apart from hardcore action movies (Ghajini actually falls quite close to the league), I think he has explored every genre and done it very much successfully. Maybe a total romantic movie like 'Fanaa' is what he should come up with, as its been a while he done it now.

In my Shahrukh post I had mentioned that he was the reason I started getting hooked to watching movies, but its Aamir Khan who aroused my interest into more quality movies and soon became the actor whose movies were highly anticipated.
