Read at ur own risk, spoilers ahead...

Major Wiliam Cage (Tom Cruise) who hasn’t been in a combat is suddenly forced to fight an alien race that looks more of a suicide mission for him. As a result he dies, but before dying the mimic’s blood enters inside his body causing a time loop that makes Cage reset day again and again thereby making him fight the same combat battle numerous times. The only person who understand what Cage is going through is Rita (Emily Blunt) who is a famous Special Forces warrior and had the same power Cage has now during Verdun war. Now she has to help Cage, and win this battle against aliens by training him.

The movie was like a tough video game for me. There are different levels, you die just when you are near to complete 1st one, you play again and go little far before failing again. Then you change the way you play, and come closer to completion. Finally after numerous attempts, you reach next level only to find new twists making you play earlier level differently again. Thats how this movie goes, and a reason why its enjoyable to watch Cage work hard every time he dies to succeed in the battle at beach, plus he has unlimited lives to try it again and again until Omega (the thing that needs to be destroyed to win over alien like mimics) finds him.

There are plenty of twists and turns during every attempt of Cage after dying. His first try is more of a eye-witness to observe everything, not because he knows at that time that he will be present here again later but because he isn’t battle trained to fight.

The odd occasions when he dies in weirdest ways, like the roll over on van just to get other side of camp and meet Rita, was one of funniest scene. Or when Cage tries to tell Master Sergeant Farell (Bill Paxton) that he has lived this day before and knows what will happen next, and Sergeant ignores him only to continue preaching his regular speech to him. Bill Paxton gives a very humorous touch in the way he delivers those dialogues and not believe in Cage. Quite similar to the scenes between Cage and General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), where General at first forcefully sends Cage to battlefield, and then later on is way too stubborn to help Cage and Rita.

Its not just the repeat of scenes that are enjoyable, where we see Cage struggle to reach one step further in the battle. But also, how he changes the way he plays the day again, like ignoring his fellow j squad in battle, and then even ignoring Rita to reach further. Another funniest scene comes when Cage and Rita succeed in getting important material that would let Cage find where Omega  is, Rita asks Cage ‘Now what next ?’ and Cage replies ‘I don’t know, we never reached this far’.

The level of unpredictability is so high in the film, that in the finale we see Cage and Rita fight alpha and mimics in Paris where Omega is, and this time they have only one chance as Cage hasn’t lived this day before.

Its the great plot and how wonderfully its edited that makes the movie so enjoyable, even with the number of same scene repetition you don’t get the bored feeling, thanx to either the turn of events or the angle with which the scene is shown.

The only thing that I disliked was the alphas and mimics looks, they had a very unlikable look and thereby not really pleasing to see.

The ending is different, its hard to say if Omega gets fully destroyed or not with those blood going inside Cage’s body before he wakes up.

Tom Cruise is in wonderful form, and its only final 30 mins where we see the routine of him, as the earlier part is the person who is not well equipped to handle tough situations. And he shines playing both very well. Emily Blunt also has a very good role and not limited to just being a part of Tom Cruise movie, infact she is the scene stealer at many places, specially when she is training Cage. Also, the romantic emotional bond the director is able to build between them in this action movie is commendable, as it comes out nicely.

Edge of Tomorrow is a enjoyable sci-fi action movie, with plenty of twists and turns, it keeps you guessing and good performances from the lead makes it a very good watch.

Verdict : 3.5/5
