Recap 2011 : Top100 Songs

As always I have prepared my list of  Top 100 hindi film songs of 2011. You may differ with my order, expectedly.. but most of the songs must be in your list too. There are few omissions that might surprise, but I always end up having some different opinions on few songs more often than not.

Talking of singers, it isn't hard to guess that 2011 belonged to one man 'Mohit Chauhan'. Apart from 9 outstanding songs he sang in Rockstar itself, he also was very good in 'Acha lagta hai' , 'Khawabon ke parindey' and 'Dil beqarar kyun hai'.

Kay Kay had a okay year, with 'O mama' his best track. Also, he did very well in the emotional 'bojhal si' song. 'Tum ho mera pyar' was good. 'Life sahi hai', 'Meri ada bhi' and 'Yaadon ki album' lacks regular listenings but his vocals were good in them. While 'Khawabon khawabon', 'Mere brother ki dulhan', 'Make some noise for desi boyz' lacked freshness and most of them were loud.

Sonu Nigam had a forgettable year, songs like 'My heart is beating' and 'Abhi mujh mein kahin' didn't work for me. Only 'Allah maaf kare' was his good song in the year.

Shreya Ghoshal had a good year, she excelled in songs like 'Main chali', 'Acha lagta hai', 'Teri meri', 'Saibo'  and 'Oh la la'. Chikni chameli wasn't her type of song.

Sunidhi Chauhan had some great songs like, 'Yeh saali zindagi', 'Te amo', 'Aa zara' and 'Main chandigarh di star'.. Most of them being high pitch numbers which she has very much specialized herself doing the most.

Suraj Jagan was very good throughout the year in songs like 'Karma is a bitch', 'Koi aa raha paas hai', 'Fareeda', 'Jaa chudail'. While his rendition of the evergreen 'ruk jaana nahi tu kahin haarke' was brilliant!

Javed Ali had only 'kun faaya kun' and 'Ae khuda' as worth remembering songs in 2011, and both were not solo songs. 'Sa ra ra', 'Pyar mein' and 'Pyar ke liye', were few of his other notable songs.

Special Mentions :

• Master Saleem sang two brilliant songs, 'Awaara' and 'Razia'.
• Aditi Singh Sharma, who came into notice with songs like 'Yehi meri zindagi' in 2009 and 'Da da dilli' in 2010. She sang 'Choomantar', 'Dhaeon Dhaeon', 'Madhushala' and 'Luv ka the end', all were pretty good songs.
• Shilpa Rao had a amazing year too with 4 songs 'Dil dar ba dar', 'Uh oh oh', 'Aahatein' and 'Jazba'.
• The lyrics may had dissappointed me in Dum maaro dum song, but Anushka Manchanda didn't. Still feel chikni chameli was her song! Also, loved her 'What the F!' song.
• Ash King was very good in 'Te amo' and 'I love you' songs.

So, here's the final list for the top songs in 2011 ..

TOP 25 SONGS :

1. Saadda Haq - rockstar
I love the angst in this song, a kind of revolution, urge and shout to the world that you dont need to tell me what I should do.

2. Awaara - 7 khoon maaf
The tale of a falling love, a love that is there, but can't be felt. A song reflecting the pain and suffering in a love, that is about to come to a end.

3. Jo bhi main - rockstar
The views aren't getting expressed properly, because the words are destroying what I meant to say. I understand people through their music of their soul, not their words they speak. I am trying to discover myself in this world, seeking myself in every person I meet.

4. Phir mohabbat - murder2
There is nothing left between us, but the heart still beats for you, it still yearns for your love, it is on a journey of falling in love with you once more. No, I can't control my heart..

5. Tum ho - rockstar
The love between us is too strong, that the world can have any effect on us now. I can feel you everytime I think about you, I wish I could have you.

6. Ae khuda - murder2
I didn't care for anyone as a result I am the sole reason for my own downfall. A 'very low' feel song describing the person who is emotionally broken down.

7. Bhaag dk bose - delhi belly
Love the song for its madness and high beats. A song about running from a situation else you would face bad consequences.

8. Sau baras - haunted
This person has been suffering since years now, and remembers the time when she used to be happy, with fun days, wonder where they are gone now. A very painful song!

9. Naadaan parindey - rockstar
He wont come back now, the pain of his love is too deep for him to return back home now. He wishes that his eyes aren't eaten, as he wants to see his love.

10. O mama - 7 khoon maaf
Madness at its best! A rock kinda of feel in the song with the use of guitar and drums.

11. Dil dar ba dar - yeh saali zindagi
The people questioning the paths they chose, why they met. A take on the life, love and its troubles, a heart that keeps wandering places in search of happiness. I particularly love the composition, and the way 'Dil dar ba dar' is kept in the whole song.

12. Darling - 7 khoon maaf
Inspired from a russian song, the chorus is amazing, and a return of sorts for Usha Uthup with this charbuster song. I specially love the lines 'public mein sansani ek baar karne do'.

13. Ishq risk - mere brother ki dulhan
A very good composition from Sohail-Sen, totally romantic the moment it starts with those radio backgrounds. And Rahat's rendition simply enriches the song completely. Its a take on the sweet and bitter sides of Love.

14. Chammak challo (international version) - ra.one
The much talked about song in the year, with Akon giving the english and hindi vocals himself. One of best dance number of the year, and specially love the tunes used in the song. Good work by the likes of Vishal and Shekhar.

15. I love you - bodyguard
A romantic song that appeals for the simpleness it holds. Ash King's got a melodious voice in such songs, dil gira dafatan and now this one. Special reference to the lines 'itna toh mujhe hai maloom.. milke tujhe, behtar main insaan ban gaya'.

16. Aur ho - rockstar
One of the song's that haunts for the kind of feel it possesses, reflecting the vulnerability of a person. 'Main hasrat mein ek uljhi dor hua suljha de', also one of the best filmed song in 2011.

17. Acha lagta hai - aarakshan
I love the romance in this song, a beautiful composition with Mohit and Shreya vocals.

18. Hawa hawai - shaitan
A very good remake of old classic from Mr.India. I like the beautiful voice of Suman Sridhar, there's that cuteness and softness in her voice that made the song look so good.

19. Haawa haawa - rockstar
A tale of queen who wants to be set free from the rich life at king's place. She wants to go out, enjoy, dance around.

20. Jaa chudail - delhi belly
A dream song of a lover telling his girlfriend, he doesn't need her and giving her a name of 'Chudail', because she dumped him. Suraj Jagan very well brings the angst, comical angst in this song.

21. Senorita - zindagi na milegi dobara
Three actors themeselves singing this song, a fun filled song about enjoying the good moments of life forgetting the hurdles.

22. Ek manzil - soundtrack
One of best motivational song of the year, as it links various things like various thoughts with one goal, illiterates with one successful person, storms with a seashore and paths with a destination. The start of the song especially creates the kind of atmosphere that can't be described in words.

23. Character dheela - ready
What made this song work the most apart from its rendering by neeraj and composition, was the lyrics. It could be any boy's song, and at the same time it could also describe salman khan too. In all, a fun filled dance number.

24. Aahatein - ek main aur ekk tu
The person is no longer there, and there is a emptyness due to that, those moments are incomplete now with that person missing. A very good emotional number by Amit Trivedi.

25. Nakkaddwaley disco - delhi belly
A modern and very different kind of qawaalli. Funny lyrics as well as the composition.

Recap 2011 : Special Mentions

There were lots of people who made a mark in 2011 through their performances and made their presence felt, irrespective of how the film  fared. Here's a look at all of them ..

Kriti Malhotra

She got a call due to one of her photo on facebook, did audition and got selected to do character of Yasmin in Dhobi Ghat. She was the one that most people loved the most, even the ones who didn't like the film. She had the connectivity power in her performance, the straightforward, less educated(as seen by her handling camera), simple dressed and full of emotions. A very good debut!

Vivaan Shah

Personally, his performance was exceptional for me. I feel he is much different from Imaad Shah, as imaad appears to be acting like his father Naseeruddin. But Vivaan, is different, though on the similar league of his father, the style is not the same. He had the maximum role among all the male leads in 7 khoon maaf, despite being a debutant and how easily he played the cute, sweet and loving 'Sugar'.

Sanjay Suri

He was excellent as Abhimanyu in 'I am', the kind of pain he goes through in childhood and tries to cope with his life. as all those terrible memories keep haunting him. It was the most emotional story out of all four in the film, and his performance made it even more impactful.

Rayo Bakhirta, Devyendu Sharma and Kartikeya Tiwari

The bonding of this trio was the best part in a otherwise over-rated film 'Pyar ka Punchnama'. Also, very good nicknames given to them, specially Liquid and Rajjo. Chowdhary is the coolest one, Liquid the aggressive one and Rajjo the emotional one. All three perfectly suited their characters.

Partho A.Gupte

He played 'Stanley' in Stanley ka dabba. As a child actor, he made a very good mark. I feel he should get the same amount of praise and applause which Darsheel once got. The final scene of the film is simply heart breaking, and Partho never over-plays any scene in the film. A very good find!

Nana Patekar

As a corrupt policeman, he was at his near best in 'Shagird'. Had the film been well-edited and with more twists, it would had done well. Nana very much carried the film through his performance.

Shraddha Kapoor

She may had made her debut in Teen Patti. But, Love ka the end was the film that gave her the 1st lead role film. Though the film couldn't work due to not so interesting screenplay, and writing too. Yet, Shraddha Kapoor had lots of good moments in the film, plus she looks very cute and beautiful. I specially loved her in 'Tonight' song a lot.

Gulshan Devaiya

He was excellent in both his films 'Shaitan' and 'That girl in yellow boots'. While, his performance as KC was very good in Shaitan, his two scenes in TGIYB i.e tv one and massage one, were mindblowing. I prefer Shaitan over TGIYB though, probably because it was a lengthy role, while the other one had him in more of a cameo.

Prashant Narayanan

He stole the show in Murder 2, the villianeous act was too good and for me worth of a nomination in every award shows. And special mention to the way he sings the old song 'bheege honth tere', and the menacing laugh.

Saqeeb Saleem and Saba Azaad

The duo had an amazing chemistry in their debut film. Saba ofcourse I loved a lot because of her looks, so cute she is. Also, acting wise, both were excellent and rarely appeared like debutants.

Parineeti Chopra

Another debutant that made her mark in 2011, who would had thought that instead of Ranveer or Anushka, the name stuck on their mind after watching Ladies vs Ricky Behl would be 'Parineeti Chopra'. She was that good! Her comic timing, dialogue delivery were spot on, and even looks-wise appeared to be just as she says 'I am looking red hot'.

Recap 2011 : Best Albums

Some very good albums came this year, some memorable songs, some forgettable ones, but most of the music lived upto its mark and some path-breaking music too came out. In comparison to last year, 2011 was just slightly on low side. Here is my list of Top10 albums of the year :

1. Rockstar

A R Rahman had to silent his critics, although he was giving good albums, yet that magic of Delhi6.. his last terrific album was missing. But Rockstar easily overhauls Delhi6. Also, he experiments with Mohit as the voice of Jordan giving him 9 songs in the album. Yet, all the songs work out so well, without giving any feel of repeativity or boredom. 'Sadda Haq, Jo bhi main, Tum ho and Naadaan Parindey' remains my top 4 songs from the album. While Dichotomy of fame, the best theme out of the three.

2. Saat Khoon Maaf

Bekaaran was the only song that I couldn't connect to. Loved all other songs, Vishal did a superb work in the O mama song, what madness that track has just like Dhan te nan. While, also the album made a sort of comeback for Usha Uthup with 'Darling' and how well she sang it. But, my favourite song remains 'Awaara' by Master Saleem, lots of emotions in that song. And it is the fav song of Vishal Bharadwaj too. So, our opinions matches here.

3. Ra.One

Chammak Challo was one of the best dance track of the year, with the voice of Akon. Raftaarein having that feel of rd burman song, sort of tribute it was. While, Bhare Naina was the under-rated track from the film. Criminal was yet again very good composition. Dildaara took time for me before I liked it. Vishal-Shekhar had a complete winner in hands.

4. Delhi Belly

Though Ram Sampath gave good music in his debut album 'Love ka the end', its Delhi Belly where he got fully noticed with some path-breaking songs in the entire album, very different from each other.. yet having that comic theme in common. Dk bose the best of all, my personal fav too. Also, nakkadwale disco was good innovation in different kind of qawaali. Switty had the hip-hop feel while Jaa chudail a funny angst song. Saigal blues and tere siva, the under-rated songs.. I specially liked saigal blues song, the one with which film begins. Ram Sampath, could be someone to rely on in future if he gives such good music consistently.

5. Haunted

Chirantan Bhatt's best album till date. Also, I like his voice, both jaaniya and mujhe de de har gham tera, had that pain the songs needed to have, and no doubt compositions were good too. Tera hi bas hona chahoon, a song I love a lot now. But, the best track of album was 'Sau baras gujre bin jiye' by tia bajpai.. her first ever song and I fell in love with it only after initially disliking the song terming it 'bahut slow hai'. And the famous song, kay kay's Tum ho mera pyar.. which was good yet not as addictive as other songs were in the album for me.

6. Murder2

Just as they did in Raaz-tmc, multiple composers were used in this soundtrack too. Mithoon's both songs 'Aye khuda' and 'Phir mohabbat' were the best of the album. I love his songs, he was slightly on the down side with Lamhaa album track, but here, he was at his best in both the songs. It was almost tough to even choose my fav among both. While Aa zara I love for its composition and sunidhi chauhan's brilliant rendition.

7. Yeh Saali Zindagi

Nishat Khan's first album, and quite a good one it was. Dil ba dar was a magical song, both audio and in the visuals too, Shilpa rao sang it superbly well with Javed ali rendition of the word 'dar ba dar, dil dar dar' enhancing the feel of song. Also, sunidhi's title version was good one. Loved sa ra ra, javed's version.. so much full of energy and a positive vibe it brings. I didn't like male version. While ishq tere jalwe was a nice track too.

8. Mausam

Pritam gave many good albums in the year, but this one was his best, the songs were rich in quality. Shahid Mallya got introduced with song 'Rabba main toh mar gaya', which was very famous. Mika sang saj dhaj ke which resembled bhootni ke, yet was very entertaining. Hans Raj Hans made a comeback of sorts with Ek tu hi, I liked the song a lot.. wish the emotional impact was higher in the film. And my personal fav song of the album 'Mallo Malli' by Tochi Raina, really awesome tunes used.

9. Shaitan

The reason album worked for me, was that I could feel something fresh and different in this music of Prashant Pillai and co. Some good tunes, high beats in some songs, and compositions that appeal and yet sound so different, and new. Pintya and Zindagi were my personal favs, while Fareeda was under achieved song in my view. Nasha was the famous one, which masses or youth liked the most. Even O Yaara is nice. While, Bali (sound of shaitan) was the best theme among all.

10. Mere Brother ki Dulhan

Sohail Sen delivers a great album once again after 'What's your Rashee', their work in Khelin hum jee jaan sey was commedable too. But Mere brother ki dulhan brings them back to the music which masses love. Dhunki and title song are total dance numbers, sung by neha bhasin and kay kay respectively. Do Dhaari talwaar less popular song of album, and is one of my most favs.. its sung by shahid mallya who sang rabba song in Mausam. Choomantar and Ishq risk are the best songs of the album, the former for its composition while the latter for the romantic feel and rahat's voice.

Don2, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Love Breakups Zindagi and Love ka the End miss out.

Recap 2011 : Best Films

It was a good year for Hindi films with some creative films coming up, out of which few got noticed, few got praised, few did well at boxoffice too, while few couldn't impress the aam janta. Then, there were some blockbusters that deserved to be so, and some that didn't. In comparison to last year, 2011 was better.. not by any big margin though. Here's a look at my Top 10 films of the year ..

1. Rockstar

One of best musical film ever, with outstanding performance by Ranbir Kapoor, and Imtiaz Ali outdoing his previous works. And not to forget, A R Rahman's music which is very much soul of the film. Non-linear complex structure describing the vulnerable moments of love, the rise to rockstar fame and the destruction. And fitting farewell to Shammi Kapoor through this film. Yeh bada jaanwar hai, yeh apni duniya banayega

2. Saat Khoon Maaf

After watching Kaminey, one may say Vishal can't make more tougher film, but he does. This one was tougher for the plot was small, to construct it and develop the kind of screenplay he did was commendable. And the star of the film Priyanka who so well drafts into all the 7 roles. Neil Nitin Mukesh making the most impact among all husbands while Vivaan Shah stole the show as the supporting character in the film. It was less mad film than Kaminey, but more rich in emotions. Miss Sunaina raasta nahi badla karti, balki unn kutto ko mita diya karti hai

3. Don 2

Can Farhan Akhtar dissappoint ? Nope! Shahrukh Khan delivers one of very stylish performance with those well written punchlines, good twists and turns in the climax, and a great background score by Shankar Ehsan Loy. Boman Irani excels in a negative shade character. Ab mujhe koi nahi rok sakta

4. No one killed Jessica

Its memorable film for me personally! Very good screenplay, to be able to capture one of India's terrible incident emotionally, and yet making the masses get entertained. Rani Mukherjee can have a sigh of relief with a hit film, plus a performance that was loved by everyone. Vidya Balan was the star of the film for me, so natural and the dialogue that gives me goosebumps 'kya kisi ki zindagi ki keemat itni kam hai hamari country hai'. Amit Trivedi's music enhances the anger and pain which Sabrina goes through.

5. Dhobi Ghat

A highly creative film made by Kiran rao, what a start to her direction career. How well, she captures the Mumbai city through lives of 4 people. Pratiek Babbar steals the show, with Aamir in a restrained performance yet very natural. Kriti Malhotra one of major finds of the film, she is one character everyone feels the most after end of film. Monica Dogra has some good acting skills to go with her beautiful looks. Very good background music given by Gustavo Santaolalla.

6. Zindagi na milegi Dobara

Zoya very much lived upto the expectations after 'luck by chance'. There were talks of another dil chahta hai in the making, but the film was very different. Despite being bit slow, the film hits the right chords with good performances from Hrithik and Farhan especially. The poems that Farhan narrates, written by Javed Akhtar remains with you for days after watching the film.

7. Singham

I never expected to like this film, forget about loving it. But, Rohit Shetty really delivers a powerful action film. Ajay Devgan has been terrific since last year, and this time his performance could even fetch him a best actor award. And, Prakash Raj again makes you laugh despite being in a villian role, he has that ability to bring comedy into a scene suddenly. Also, Ajay-Atul's music specially title song, with that lion roar enhances the drama.

8. Yeh saali Zindagi

Sudhir Mishra uses lots of montages, quick flashbacks, dream sequences in this romantic-drama. Chitrangada looks smashing hot as always, with a good performance while Aditi Rao surprises with quite a makeover after Delhi6, in such a glamour avatar. Irrfan Khan is as natural as he is always, with the way he delivers those funny dialogues 'maano ek hawa ka jhonka aaya, aur steering khud hi chalne laga'.

9. Shaitan

A lighter version of Paanch film, made by Bejoy Nambiar. A dose of over-madness, a moment bringing that evil out of you. I loved the camera-work in the film, very stylish. Some good performances by Neil, Gulshan, Rajit, Kirti and Shiv. And a amazing romantic track of Rajeev Khandelwal and Sheetal Menon, no dialogues yet so effective.

10. That Girl in Yellow Boots

Anurag Kashyap's simple film up to date, yet very disturbing. The quest to find his father, and the shock she gets at the end, amazing silent climax to follow it up with. Kalki's outdoes her Dev.D performance. While Gulshan has a very good cameo in the film.

Stanley ka Dabba, Ready, Mujhse Fraandship Karoge, Delhi Belly and Patiala House miss out...
