The Cabin in the Woods
Directed by : Drew Goddard

Lets get this party started..

Five friends, Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Dana (Kristen Connolly), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Marty (Fran Kranz) and Holden (Jesse Williams) plan to spend the weekend at Curt cousin's secluded cabin in the woods. While playing truth or dare during the 1st night they discover a basement that is full of wierd stuff as Dana reads lines written in Latin from a diary that awakens some night zombie creatures. But things aren't like a typical horror movie, as we see from the start its a reality show with bets thrown on what kind of creatures will they end up trying to survive against, as Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) and Hadley (Bradley Whitford) set them up with hurdles clearly wanting them to die. The film plays out mostly as a satire on horror films, but it never worked for me on that level. Maybe its one of those movies that you either love or hate, and I certainly hated it. Even the jump scares were very stupid even if it was meant to be stupid. I can recall few things that I liked, Curt's scene when he tries to jump off with the bike when we know how it is likely to end, Dana unleashing the hell on the operating guys and Marty a character that always looked the smartest. I have no problems with what the film was trying to show, but its execution never really brings out the satire comedy it so tries to. Or I would just take the safe approach and call it not my kind of movie.

Ready or Not
Directed by : Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett

Jesus christ,what happened to you?
In-laws.

Its the wedding day, and Grace (Samara Weaving) is worried if her going to be husband's Alex (Mark O'Brien) family would accept her or not. But she isn't aware what Alex is hiding from her, a particular tradition his family has where every new addition to the family must take part in a game at midnight of wedding day. This is also not a typical horror movie, but a satire dark comedy which I had a good time watching. Mostly the characters behave insane, at few places its silly but that works in this narrative too. The story is predictable apart from the final twist because you aren't sure if the ritual they are trying to say exists in reality or its just a myth. But I never really waited for that part, I was just keen how terribly the family's plan and strategy falls apart with Grace turning out to be intelligent enough for them. Samara Weaving seems to be enjoying the character, the little dances initially she does all happy to play game thinking its a routine 'hide and seek' and then the bad mouthing she gives later on whether its the little kid or the stranger in car on the road who doesn't stop for help, 'Fucking rich people' are her words. Emilie (Melanie Scrofano) is another fun character that is slightly high on drugs and keeps killing wrong people, she even shouts at why she keeps doing that in one hilarious scene.

Watching the family pick different weapons as they get ready to hunt Grace, there's Aunt Helene (Nicky Guadagni) who picks a big axe looking weapon and then there's Fitch (Kristian Bruun) who gets a cross-bow and later uses google to find how to actually use it. Tony's (Henry Czerny) abuses when he gets frustated are fun, specially when he shouts at the photo of his father. Daniel (Adam Brody) was the least interesting character which is a pity as the opening scene is of him saving Alex where they are playing same game 30 years ago, and as grown-up Daniel appears to be someone who is sarcastic and drunk most of time, he does twice help Grace though. Few other nitpickings would be about Grace's past life that we aren't told about, the story moves straight to the wedding day, I personally was fine with it but some people may find her character wasn't explored fully before making her dive into the madness of the Alex's family. There are moments of scare including gore, few jump-scares thrown in too but its the comedy (intentional for a change) that makes this movie fun to watch. There's no value to anyone's life in this movie which is why its insane, so as long as you are okay with the random deaths that keeps coming once game begins, and you aren't looking for a regular horror movie, then Ready or Not will be a enjoyable ride till the end with the most perfect dialogue to finish it off.
