Waqt kisi ke liye nahi rukta, gujarta waqt hai .. aur kharch hum hote hai.
Spoilers ahead..
What looked like a movie that I would finally dislike starring Ranbir, turned out to be one that I watched for 4 days continously. You can sense Kuch kuch hota hai or DDLJ or Love Aaj Kal or Rockstar at places, but only slightly. Good screenplay, excellent cinematography and very well shot songs specially Batmeez and Dilliwali Girlfriend.
Ayaan does enter the commercial cinema territory after his 1st film 'Wake up Sid' which was very far away from it. This time too he has a message attached that Ranbir says in final dialogue scene 'Waqt kisi ke liye nahi rukta, gujarta waqt hai aur kharch hum hote hai', one of best lines in movie. Infact 2nd half is totally Ayaan's, who even has an appearance during 'kabhi kabhi' song scene.
1st half brings lot of laughter, the friendship bonding between Ranbir, Aditya Roy and Kalki.. the flirting of Ranbir and Evelyn Sharma (she played the dumb and hot girl role so well, Race2 makers might need to see her performance), and the love that blossoms between Ranbir and Deepika.
What I didnt like was Ranbir's current life after that span of 8 yrs that is shown through 'Ilahi' and one conversation scene.. it was too short. Only because its the life he loved, so maybe extra 5-10 mins would had been great for that aspect. Also, there are few cliches, for instance the opening dialogue scene of Deepika, dialogue writing could had been bit more real there.
How well Ayaan shows Ranbir-Aditya bonding, very real, and not spoon feeding. Also, Aditya's was only story that wasn't given happy end. Though watching Aditya again in an alcoholic role gave monotonous feel at times. Kalki is surprisingly one of main highlights of the movie with her performance, as Deepika describes it before the Batmeez song in the movie itself. Her scenes during the Manali journey and at Manali are hilarious, special reference to the scene where she wants to fight the men while her friends are running.
Ranbir-Deepika chemistry is visible in each frame, probably much more than even Bachna ae Haseeno as this time they get more screen space together. Be it their first meet at station, the life lesson he teaches her when she is afraid of being herself, her feeling in being love with him, he likes being with her but doesn't know she loves her, the masti they have during the dance competition, and when she asks him what happens when someone says I love you. That is infact one of my fav scene of movie when Ranbir replies 'iske baare mein baat nahi karenge', and holds her denying her to get away when she asks him to let her go (the rockstar angle). Also, the final dialogue speech of Ranbir, 'apne mind mein shaadi kar chuka hoon tujhse, tu bhi kar le'.
Special mention to Pritam who has given great music with not even single song that can be termed as average. My favs were Kabira and Batmeez, but Dilliwali/Ilahi/Ghagra had great visuals too.
Farooq Sheikh is superb in small role as father of Ranbir, so effortless. While Tanvi Azmi has a key scene too in pre-climax. Madhuri Dixit tells how a item song can look great without being cheap, though choreography wasnt top class, still lovable visuals.
Overall, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani works for me big time, another excellent movie in the filmography of Ranbir Kapoor. Ayaan once again succeeds in making a very good movie on self-realization where the character realizes his mistakes as the story moves towards end.
Verdict : EXCELLENT
