Movie Analysis : Maximum

Directed by Kabeer Kaushik
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2339549/

Naseeruddin Shah : Tum humhe bhool jaayo, yeh haq hai tumko.. meri baat aur hai. Maine toh
Sonu Sood            : Mohabbat ki hai ? Toh aayo, nibhayo mohabbat.

Impressive star-cast, still the film didn't click because of a very slow screenplay, and a script that's very loose, the final 20 mins are plain stupid. I have seen director's make 3 hr long movies and still keep you engaged, and here a under 2 hr film fails to captivate you. Why did Kabeer opt to rush in the narrative all of a sudden in the end ?

As a director also, Kabeer fails in many sequences. Some scenes are needlessly kept long, while some should had been completely edited out. Pretty average Editing. Some of the dialogues are well written. Background score is decent.

The item song girl looks over-weight, though I like the song.

What is good about the film, is the performances..  Naseeruddin Shah shines as a bad cop (encounter specialist), love his scene with Sonu Sood "humne toh mohabbat ki hai", and then the scene with Amit Sadh "twinkle twinkle little star, How ? How ? aage kya tha".

Sonu Sood is impressive, I like the way he emotes through his eyes in some sequences, also his slow conversations with Amit Sadh.

Vinay Pathak once again proving, how good he is in non-comic roles.

Amit Sadh was very good, in a supporting role.. waiting to see how he does in next film 'Kai po che'.

Neha Dhupia was decent in a housewife role. Nice to see Mohan Agashe in a small role. Anjana Sukhani was kinda of in a friendly special appearance..

Overall, Maximum works only for the good performances. The story of rivalry between two cops, ends up neither realistic nor entertaining. Plus, the climax is a big let-down.

The Amazing Spiderman [Views]

Directed by Marc Webb
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0948470/

Peter Parker : I have got to stop him, because I created him.
Gwen  Stacy : That's not your job ..
Peter Parker : Maybe it is..

For me, this super-hero is first of a kind.. because I haven't seen any of the previous spiderman movies. As always, I wanted a super-hero film to be full of action, stunts and heroics. But, this film focussed a lot on relationship of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone). Also, the nerdy aspect of Peter, and the realisation of the powers he has just got. Inspite of that, I liked the film quite much.

Because its 1st film in the franchise, I can expect next one to be more pacy. The build up of character's has already happened in this part.

Background score by James Horner was superb. Dialogues were nice, though I felt the famous dialogue 'With great powers comes great responsibility' could had been retained. They instead, used it in a different way when Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) gives the advice to Parker.

Screenplay was touch slow, but as I said the kind of narrative Marc Webb wanted.. it was always gonna be that way. Still, the 2nd half does have a better pace.

Andrew Garfield, I felt was very good especially in the part where he realised that he has just got some power, and the fear of controlling that power in me was so brilliantly enacted by him. Also, the nerdy romantic talks, like the 1st conversation in class with Gwen, or the asking for date, or when he wants to tell her something but isn't able to tell. That last one was one of my fav scene from the movie.

Emma Stone is my new crush, loved her looks as well as her acting. She has nice comic timing too.

Rhys Ifans (Dr.Connors/Lizard) was the perfect villian, the 1st scene with Parker and then the converting into a lizard sequence was very good.

Irffan Khan was good, much better than Anil Kapoor did in MI4. Though, the point remains the same, Indian actors aren't going to get meaningful roles in a English film. As seen in this film, his role is very much edited out, there was meant to be a scene where Lizard attacks him too, but no where in the movie (Unless its to come in 2nd part, which I doubt). Still, he gets one key sequence in the movie that eventually leads to twist in the narrative. Though, his accent was little bit irritating, but acting was as always spot on.

Martin Sheen's comic was very good, and so were his advices to Parker. Denis Leary scene with Parker was good one.

Waiting for 2nd part of 'The Amazing Spiderman', hoping it would be more on to the battle between Spiderman and the evil, and less on Parker and Gwen.

Movie Analysis : Teri Meri Kahaani

Directed by Kunal Kohli
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2354407/

deewane hai aapke iss baat se inkaar nahi,
kaise kahein ki humhe aapse pyar nahi..
kuch toh kasoor hai aapki adaayo ka,
akele hum gunehgaar nahi.

When you are showing 3 love stories set in different times, you need to construct a screenplay so as you don't drag any love story too much, and yet you let the audience connect to each one of them. In Teri Meri Kahaani, no story gets dragged, almost all get equal amount of screen time.. but in an attempt to over-commercialize the narration, the film ends up way below the mark.

Shahid Kapur plays 3 characters - Govind, Krish and Javed while Priyanka Chopra plays - Rukhsar, Radha and Aradhana. The times are divided into Lahore (1910), Bombay (1960) and London (2012).

My fav was Bombay and to certain extent London. There is a good dose of lovable sequences in both these stories. The set constructed for Bombay part, makes it look so beautiful.. plus the charlie chaplin type walking style humour was nice. The first conversation between Govind and Rukhsar is well written. Special mention to the costumes of Priyanka and Prachi Desai (guest appearance).. pink saree of priyanka and the indian outfit on prachi looks so beautiful. Also, the whistle tune of 'Yeh hai bombay meri jaan', is rightly placed. One irritating thing Kunal Kohli did was, those 'woh mile', 'woh phir mile', 'uff', etc etc.. that wasn't needed. 'Jab se Mere Dil ko Uff' choreography was so average, its my fav song from album.

The London part brings today's youth, and the social networking into limelight aptly, especially twitter that is mainly in focus. The revenge between Krish and ex-gf Meera (Neha Sharma, guest appearance) looks unreal to me. Also, the split between Krish and Radha wasn't too convincing. Special mention to that Don dialogue, and the drunk sequence of Krish with his friends and a random girl at bar.

Lahore part was the one I disliked the most, there is over-dose of shayaris. And the character of Javed is too filmy to make me like it. How silly was the picturisation of 'Humse pyar kar le tu' song! Even its choreography was terrible.

Upto interval, I quite liked the film and was wondering this could be a re-watch film. But, the film totally goes downhill in 2nd half, and the climax culminating all 3 parts is rushed creating no impact what so ever. Specially, Javed-Aradhana end is so dramatic.

Kunal Kohli gives touches of his old films 'Hum Tum' and 'Fanaa' in this film, but wish he made a film as good as them instead.

Shahid Kapur acted very well, loved him the most as Govind. Priyanka Chopra looked better, and was much more likeable then her last few films. I liked her in all three roles equally.

Prachi Desai in small guest apperance was good. While I couldn't like Neha Sharma in her guest role.

Overall, Teri Meri Kahani works at places mainly Bombay and London parts. The narration and Lahore part lets the film down.

Movie Analysis : Rowdy Rathore

Directed by Prabhu Deva
Imdb link -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2077833/

Tujhe jab gussa aata hai toh tu chillaata hai, main.. udaata hoon.

After a long time I have loved a Akshay Kumar film so much.. For a change, not only his performance was good, but the film was a complete entertainer too. Prabhu Deva as a director made best use of Akshay's action abilities, without making him speak comedy lines throughout the film like Nikhil Advani and Vijay Krishan Acharya did and miserably failed.

The plot is very common, its the screenplay, the punchlines and songs that entertains you throughout. There are places where Prabhu does slip off, some scenes get too over-the top. Also, I would had preferred a better villian, it would had been a better match up with Akshay scenes then.

The writing is good, with very good humour in comedy scenes. The background theme is excellent. The action scenes are well filmed, though the final action sequence was a let-down.. could had been more impactful.

Some of the best scenes for me were, 'tape rewind' sequences, 'I am back' filmi style Akshay returning to Devgarh, 'har jagah main dikhunga' sequence, 'Aap khiladi ko bhool gaye' dialogue scene, 'mujhe har waqt darr laga rehta hai' scene.

Songs are perfectly used. Prabhu's cameo dance is always a treat to watch. While Aa re Pritam Pyare is superbly choreographed. And special reference to that dance move on tune of 'Dhadang dhang', when Sonakshi calls Akshay inside her room.

Akshay Kumar is excellent, be it action, comedy, or some of the angry sequences. He should accept such roles more often.

Sonakshi Sinha does well, but one does feel that this was just a extended version of 'Dabangg' role. She displays her dancing skills a lot in the film, specially 'Chail chabeli' and 'Dhadang dhang'.

Ananya Nayak as small girl, was too cute.. specially that food scene where she sits on chair and looks at her father, and the hospital lori scene. Lovely!

Paresh Ganatra, is excellent.. his comic timing is superb. 'gussa nahi aa raha hai mujhko, nahiiiiii'.

Yashpal Sharma was good, rest supporting cast was decent.

Overall, Rowdy Rathore is a total entertainer, a film Akshay Kumar badly needed. Not only for a boxoffice success, but for those people who had been dissappointed by his last few films. He is back.

Verdict : VERY GOOD
