Thanks given to Brand partners. A heavy background sound begins while Danny Boyle is thanked, DEV.D title comes written. And, there is a sound of waves across some sea place as we move into the 1st visual of the film!

Anurag Kashyap has divided the screenplay of the film into 4 parts : Childhood, Paro, Chanda and Dev. The latter three parts are very much non-linear.

CHILDHOOD

He very easily covers up what kind of bonding Dev shares with Paro and his own parents in space of just 2 sequences. The fighting with Paro over food, and calling his dad by his name 'Sattu' repeatedly, till this moment appears not too big deal.

Watch out for
• Dev's close up sitting near the lake, is matched with a blurred shot of Paro coming running towards him.
• Dev's mannerisms while he drinks pepsi and has some chips.

PARO

She is from a small family, that has been close to Dev's family since childhood. She always had love for Dev, which was never visible in Dev. A reason, why her happiness is cut short when Dev comes to know from a drunk Sunil that she sleeps with him. Dev easily accepts it, and rejects Paro.. without realising that he himself made out with Rasika too. Dev's father even tries to tell him what big mistake he made as he was willing to get him married to Paro but Dev couldn't understand his love yet. While Paro seeks revenge in a different way, she accepts to marry the old guy, the moment Dev rejects and insults her. Dev checks the ring he bought for Paro, 2nd time before Emosanal atyachar song. Paro is happy, enjoying her marriage day.. Dev unable to cope with the misery of love he feels he has for paro, competely drunk falls down on the carpet near the place all people were dancing at. The chapter ends.

Songs
• 'Dhol Yaara Dhol - Part1' - paro is very happy, as Dev would be back and they would meet after many years. Ambar udke choo lun, tohre saath saath, tohre saath saath
• 'Dhol Yaara Dhol - Part2' - paro is dancing happily at haldi of Dev's brother, and dreaming of the happy times she will have with Dev. Khushiyo ki khatiya hogi, sang honge hum tum yaara.. wah wah re, wah wah
• 'Emosanal Atyachar theme' - the instrumental is heard, when the bands play it as Rasika says the word 'S.E.X', and Paro is busy getting keys from Sunil to make out with Dev.
• 'Maahi Mennu - Sad version' - just a single line of song, maahi ve mennu nahi karna hai pyar. Paro passes by Dev after getting insulted for her character and appearance both. Looks in mirror, controls her tears.
• 'Hikknaal' - ke mutiyaaro toh bachna, ae husn de naal dasna. Dev is gulping glass of vodka's/whisky, during wedding night of his brother, as he sees beautiful Paro with her soon going to be husband. Her eyes can't go away from her, despite the fact that he himself abandoned any relationship with her. The song says, that she has given him a sweet ruin, that would remain with him forever.
• 'Maahi Mennu' - ishq de gede vich phass gaya ji,gham laga dada hun kara das ki. Dev is cursing himself for the love he had/has for Paro, he feels tangled up, not able to come out of it. He is not ready to accept his mistakes.
• 'Emosanal Atyachar - Brass Version' - seene mein jalti hai armaano ki arthi, arre what to tell you darling kya hua. The song is more of a story weaved in seperately, not any normal baaraat song one may listen at marriage. Or it could be some other song played, but we are shown the version that is playing inside Dev's mind. For the 1st time, he is fully drunk, and the destruction that began with his male ego rejecting Paro, is on a very high now.

Watch out for
• The online conversation between Dev and Paro, with their nicks 'The Dude' and 'Chammak Challo'.
• The first glimpse of 'Chanda' whom Paro meets in the train. We don't know the story of Chanda yet, nor does Paro know.
• Anurag breaks Dhol yaara dhol song twice, and hence the credits too. Quite possibly a reference to how short-lived the happiness of Paro would be.
• Dev's father snatchees his cap at the airport, and asks a person to throw in dustbin. And we get to know, the relation between them is still the same.
• The first scene of Dev and Paro as grown ups, and Anurag doesn't put any conversation between them. Its a direct romance scene, which yet again tells a bit about the kind of love Dev was in.
• In the next romantic sequence, Paro says 'I love you' to Dev, but instead of saying 'I love you too, Paro', he continues to romance with her.
• 'Khud ki bezatti nahi karani, lekin apni beti ki karaani hai', paro to her father, for asking her to marry a old guy instead of asking Dev's father about their marriage.
• In Hikknaal song, Rasika first time notices that Dev had no interest in having good time i.e dancing with her.
• Maahi Mennu song is suddenly shifted to very low background, it helps in showing the pain Dev is going through in excess.
• The mad dance of Paro during Emosanal atyachar song, her husband is the only one to be really shocked watching it as he wonders the kind of girl he has got married to.

CHANDA

She comes across as a sweet, cute and innocent school going girl. A mistake of trusting her boy-friend shatters her life completely. Nobody could understand her, not even her parents who just wanted to avoid any humility her act may cause them, hence going away from Delhi. After not bearing the sin, her father realized he had committed by watching her MMS, he decides to free himself and let Leni and his wife struggle. Leni's mother isnt strong enough to manage her alone, sending her to his father's village. Eventually, Leni runs off, back to Delhi where it all started for her. No friends ready to give her any space to live, and she lands herself at a prostitute place run by Chunni. Leni now becomes Chanda. She is never forced into anything, plus gets everything from school completion to college. It becomes more like a home to her. Quite different way, a prostitute is displayed in other films. Chunni sends Dev as next customer to her place. He is terribly drunk, and thrown onto the bed... the first word Chanda gets to listen from him is 'Paro'. The chapter ends ...

Songs
• 'Yahi meri Zindagi' - the song that stars on a happy note revealing good life of Chanda(or Leni she is till now), changes its colour .. kudrat muskuraati hai meri naadani pe.. as Leni comes to know how her innocence has been mis-used by her boyfriend.
• 'Aankh Micholi' - kaise kaise nachaye zindagi, kaise kaise rulaaye zindagi. Leni is moving from places to places, hiding from people due to MMS scandal and trying to bring her life back to manageable if not normal.
• 'Paayaliya Part 1' - the transformation of Leni into Chanda happens over the course of this song. She has now entered the lifestyle of a modern prostitute, without being forced into.
• 'Emosanal Atyachar - Rock Version Part1' - read detailed description here - dev-d-emosanal-atyachar-rock.html

Watch out for
• Leni watching 'ek do teen' song on tv, Anurag in one shot tells what she likes, and the kind of place she would land to very sooner.
• Another experiment in song, as the ending part of 'Yahi meri zindagi' is slowed down by a big way to bring the kind of revolutions of thoughts going into Leni's mind thinking what all the school has just seen. She feels lost.
• Leni questioning her own dad, how could he actually watch that MMS.
• In the bus, we see her watching a song on tv, yet again a way of telling, how much close she is to reaching that place only, 'Dola re dola re'.
• The pause in aankh micholi song, when Leni reaches Delhi, rings 2nd friend who disconnects the moment comes to know that its her. The dissappointed look on Leni's face, song continues 'kaise kaise rulaaye zindagi', and the wordings included with it 'you are the best'. Lots of emotional layers added in the sequence.
• Anurag Kashyap makes a special apperance, as a customer of Leni.
• Leni chooses the name, Chanda (full name Chandramukhi), when she watches Maar daala song on tv. She has finally become what she was so far fond of watching on T.V, although in a different way.

DEV.D

Dev has left his home, to live in a hotel in Delhi where Paro lives now with her husband. He has taken to drinking much more now, plus started using drugs too. He gets to meet Chunni, who takes him to his place, fully drunk Dev then reaches place of Chanda, who in 1st meeting comes to know only that he loves someone called 'paro'. Dev knows Paro has returned from Honeymoon, he asks Rasika to meet and spyies Paro only to come to know that she is very much happy with her husband. This hurts Dev's ego, and he feels he needs a girl to, but for what ? Rasika too leaves him as she finally realizes, dev never cared for her and she was just a timepass for him. As Rasika is gone, Dev decides Chunni could give him new girl, and he happens to meet Chanda again, this time in complete senses.

Chanda isn't the kind of girl Dev would had wanted, yet she was the girl, he would had wanted to get. 'Log pyar karte hai, karna chahna kya hota hai', Paro very well knows that despite the love she still has for Dev, he can't ever love her back that way. Had he done so, she would easily had left her husband. He isn't ready to accept that he doesn't love Paro. Chanda even says, you would had stopped her marriage if you loved her, but you didn't due to your ego. At the Momo's place, Dev again admits he loves Paro a lot, just after having spent time with Chanda and probably knowing by now that she loves him. And then he says to keep her heart 'Chanda,I love you too, you know'.. just as Paro told to him, you can't love anyone. The next scene further elaborates that he can't understand what he loves, as when Chanda says You are not so bad, I love you', after she has gone, his I love you too comes with a expression of 'You said, I should too then'.

After leaving Chanda, getting himself in a mess for killing 7 ppl when he wasn't in senses due to being drunk and taking drugs, he returns to his home to see his dad dead. He cries with his mom, feeling little ashamed as his dad always gave him whatever he wanted, yet he never respected him, for him he was just 'Sattu'. He sits at the lake, where the film began.. Paro's words comes to his mind 'tum kisi se bhi pyar nahi kar sakte, sivaaye khud ke.. tumhari aukaat dikha rahi hoon' and then Chanda's words 'tumhe ek baat pata hai, you are not so bad, I love you'. He is now thinking what he wants, and whom he loves. He re-thinks the momo's place conversation while drinking at a bar too. Yet he requires that one final thing to awaken him up which comes when he very nearly gets killed, as a car gets struck next to him on the wall. He realizes, life could be short, he already was on the lesson learning experience since some time, with all past memories of both Paro and Chanda.

He has finally realized that he doesn't love Paro, he never did. He loves Chanda, thats why the ring he had always bought for Paro, is now in the finger of Chanda and he lies that he bought for her only. Old Dev would had said, its for Paro!

Songs
• 'Pardesi - Part 1' - dil ki takhti pe naam likha tera gehra.  A drink session of Dev with Chunni, a relay with this song running. It describes that although he has parted away from Paro, and living away at a room in hotel.. the love he believes he has for her hasn't vanished, and so has the pain he has got from her.
• 'Pardesi - Part 2' - laage meetha meetha chadeya bhukhar, ishq mushkil na chupe baawre yaar. The lyrics during Part 1, which were in background and told the inner pain of Dev, are repeated and this time its used directly as a song, showing Dev spying Paro and her husband, who appear to be happy and like a normal husband-wife, which Dev doesn't like.
• 'Dev-Chanda Theme 1' - this theme develops the light and romantic environment which Dev and Chanda would have in future meetings too.
• 'Nayan Tarse - Part 1' - haare re path nihaar, nayan tarse, tarse.. tarse re. Dev has taken to high drugs now, as he wants to meet Paro closely, the urge has increased now. He still doesn't know what he wants.
• 'Nayan Tarse - Part 2' - saawan barse.. saawan barse, tapish ki buhaar, nayan tarse. Dev realizes, he can't have Paro now while Paro despite insulting Dev feels bad because she does love her still, but she knows Dev doesn't.
• 'Dev-Chanda Theme 2' - this theme is used at 3 places, 1st when after final part of emosanal atyachar rock, Dev comes to Chanda very much broken after the last meet with Paro.  2nd the scene preceding when he says 'what do you know about pain'. And last one, at the momo's place when he tells Chanda how much he loves Paro still.
• 'Dil mein Jaagi' - neela ambar, halke badal.. bhar lun main aanchal mein. The feeling of falling in love for Chanda, and for a change.. we see Dev interested in enjoying with the girl moments other than just F***.
• 'Payaliya - Part 2' - daras daras ko kahe payaliya, aas lagawe din rain. Chunni's words effect Chanda as she understands he's right, Dev still loves Paro only.
• 'Saali khushi' - khaak jaisi bewajah si umar saari, kahan chali gayi hai saali khushi. Dev doesn't like a customer coming for Chanda, probably sent by Chunni. He leaves her, takes more drugs, ends up murdering 7 ppl on road through car.. being too drunk. He has lost track of his life. Twilight players are seen performing in this song, they are there in most of bad incidents of Dev's life, probably symbolism to audience, who are just watching the life of Dev unfolding.
• 'Duniya' - A sardar tries to run away taking Dev's money, but what goes, comes around. The song about a circular journey, a reference given to Dev's life too. agram tagram, dekh tamasha.. jee jee jee jee jee.
• 'Ek Hulchul si' - jeene ki talab phir jagaye, ek hulchul si ..bujhti si saanson ko kash banaye, ek hulchul si. Dev wanna restart, or finally start living now. He is transforming, having learnt from whatever he has done in the past. He wants to keep everything good now, by remaining with Chanda.

Watch out for
• Dev's childhood photo with Paro at the table of his room. He isn't able and not willing to forget her.
• When Chunni talks with Dev for first time, the frame is kept in a way that only 'Rand' is visible from 'Hotel Grand'.
•  The poster of Shahrukh's devdas, when Dev enters the place of Chunni.
• During pardesi song, dev falls down, onto a stream of water, and the song running goes into low background too, this is 4th time Anurag experiments in a song. Again, its to bring about the inside feeling of the character, with those lyrics in low tone.
• The handheld camera shot of Dev, totally drunk not knowing what is around him, just walking with Chunni helping(but not visible in frame) as he enters place of Chanda.
• 2nd half begins with dev lying on a bed and song running in background 'thanda maane coco cola', rekha bharadwaj song from Anurag's next film Gulaal.
• Dev asks Chanda 'vodka milegi', it was more like a order but she just tells him location, as he has to get up and take himself.
• The poor lady in bus, who doesn't know that Dev never liked to be given lectures.. as he never listens.
• Dev dancing with Chanda, swimming in water, hugging her when she feels low. For first time, we see this side of Dev, which is only with Chanda.
• Abhimanyu Singh of Gulaal is seen sitting at a bar where Dev is also present.

The film ends with final song lyrics 'kar le,kar le.. ab kuch aisa kar le..   ab kuch aisa kar le.. kar le, kar le tu aaj an gin roshan kirno se tan man bhar le .. macha le, jala le dil mein'. Dev is ready to live this new life with Chanda, forgetting the past.

Technically, Cinematography by Rajeev is excellent. And so is the editing by Aarti. I love the kind of screenplay is kept, with few humour lines in 1st half and at places in 2nd half too, to add bit of entertainment(for the popcorn junk). Camera-work is very good. Amit Trivedi's best music till date, one could easily re-watch film by just listening all the songs, he helped hindi films to get one of rarest best musical films.

Anurag Kashyap's direction, experiments, and ideas makes the film that special and realistic. The camera shots of drugs, or the way he shows whats going inside the character's mind, was very well done. Also, few slow zoom in's he did, for one paro scene, twice with Dev. I think, none with Chanda..

Abhay Deol is so natural, and completely into his character, plus I love the mannerisms he has as a spoilt and careless guy. Mahie's punjabi diction is very good, plus she makes a very good debut as quite a aggressive girl full of emotions. Kalki's performance was under-rated, I loved her a lot as a girl who faces lots of things in her life, and still comes out of it very well. The supporting cast did a fairly good job. Also, special mention to the young dev/paro, I think they set up the tone very well with the starting scenes.

Overall, Dev.D is a special film for me, both as a cinema lover and personally too. The film talks a lot about love, how ego could destroy relationships, how misunderstandings can lead to the downfall of the person.

Verdict : Memorable
